well my Dad had a surprise last night, so did my Boyfriend.

I got a call from my bf, saying he wanted to kill my chickens.
Dad had called him earlier saying "We have a problem John"

apparently one of my chickens, that i got as a chick this spring.
was found by one of the mexican workers and has chicks. just recently hatched. the hen is a speckled sussex.
so there were 15 chicks (and 3 eggs remaining) when they moved the hen into a chicken tractor.
one chick got crushed during the night.
13 all have chipmunk striping, and one black chick.

this mornings temperature was about 25-29. i am surprised they tried hatching this time of year. i told my bf to sweep the area and throw out any eggs he finds. been telling him to do this, cos i knew this might have happened. i am glad this breed was such a good momma.
so yeah, suddenly have 14 chicks to have my parents and bf, take care of.

i am amazed about the hatch rate considering my natural hatch failure this spring. (13 eggs, 3 chicks after 29 days under hen)

so, Surprise!

It was my understanding that reducing runoff from the city kept the waterways cleaner, thereby it woul dbe deduced that saving rainwater, and water the yard where it would not run out through the streets to carry cigarette butts and hypodermic needles into the creek would benefit nature, however it wouldnt benefit the water utility company. Maybe next there will be permits issued to enjoy sunshine, after all we are blocking the sunshine form the grass and trees that produce oxygen.

@Rarefeathers - Why do you think you cant find anyone to build a coop for your bantams? Seems like theres lots of handyperson people around. Is it comp[licated in design?

In some places yes it can be illegal. I think it has to do with area ground water. or lack of ground water or something. In a area that gets a lot of water like forks I can't imagine it being a problem.

You have to do what you have to do to protect your family and your daughter. You can't be spending money you don't have. That would be irresponsible. Letting the horses go as painlessly as possible is the right thing to do. If the Olympic Game people will do that, then that's the right decision. Obviously, you need to cover your a** by notifying the proper people so they can intervene, but if they don't, they don't. I can't imagine anyone thinking the worse of you. You took them on as a temporary measure. you never signed on for permanent care. I sympathize with your position. It's a hard choice to make, and it is unfair that you should be put in that position. You can only do the best you realistically can.

So sorry for you !
I guess the only thing you can do is try to find someone to pasture them where at least they will have grass to eat.
I would move them to a pasture on a big farm or such (ask around) then in writting with witnesses, leave a note taped to her front door, or ask a police officer to do it so it is recorded that you did notify her.
That is all.
I would, of course tell the farmer that the woman is coming to get the horses and give him her number.
What else can you do ?
I hate it when people deliberately take advantage of someone's kindness like this, but at least in a big pasture the horses will have feed...and you will not have to feed them nor be responsible for them.
Go visit them...report to authorities if the owner still has not claimed them...

Its not the daily feed that I can't afford, its the $200+ a month maintenence supplements that keep these two alive that I can't afford. The county sheriff says because I took them in, they are my responsibility now... Even without paperwork stating so... I did make a call to the Olympic game farm, and IF I bring them up there, they will take them off my hands as feed for the bears and big cats that they have... So I think what I will do is give her notice via cell mesage, telling her she has no more than 2 weeks to iether come get them, or find them a home... And if she doesnt respond to that, then away they will go to be lion, cougar, bear, ect food... It sounds heartless, and cruel. BUT every rescue is full, or are only taking in horses that can be useful again. Ive been told by many rescues that the nicest gentlest thing to do is to put them down. Because lets face it... These two will NEVER be usefull, and have been on borrowed time for the past 7 years of their lives... Juliet is 35 years old, and one daily supplement costs $10.00 a day, and thats just ONE of the supplements. So 10 x will say 29 days, would come out to YIKES!!! $280 a month for just the one oral supplement that keeps Juliett from going down... Again that is just ONE suplement for one horse. Thats not counting the E-500 that costs $120.00 a month, or the melenium gold, or the Forco, or the chaseberry, or the senior flex... There are a few other supplements that I am not listing. And all that is mandatory to keep these two old girls alive, along with the normal grass hay and senior grain...

I couldn't have passing these two along to someone else on my concience... It would eat me up. I guess I am just TOO honest.

And I also know that this could very well end my equine career. Its a scary thought, as all I have EVER wanted to do in my life is work in the equine industry...

But however, there is not a soul on this earth who can lable me as a horse dumper or abuser. I also know that my desicion will make a few people second guess just how good of a person I really am.

My family asked why I don't just send them to auction, "as that is my legal right to do." That is just not a possibility for me. I know that these two horses would wind up headed to slaughter, and niether of them would servive the trip. And unfortunately I do not have the $400 it would cost to have the euthinised, let along the extra grand to have them disposed of...

I never thought I would have to make this desicion. And even though these two have had a good past 7 years, its still hard.

Ok I have to stop thinking about this, its eating me up...

It is so not fair of her to put you in this position when you were just trying to help her out. Remember not to do her any more favors.

Well I finally heard back from the lady I took the horses for... She said to just do what I want with them now... That they are mine!!!

These horses ARE NOT MINE!!! Stupid self centered

I will stop right there, before I get myself into trouble... But I am just SO MAD!!! Irate really. She was suposed to care for these horses when she "rescued them." And now they have been dumped on me...

I know what needs to be done, I'm not happy to do it, but it needs to be done none the less...

Guess I'll go love on them again and give them a nice meal.

Didn't know that this desicion would have such a hard impact on me... I know its best for them given my circumstances, but...

I'll be back in a bit...

My heart goes out to his family.

I will definately keep these kids in my thoughts. So horible... Thank you for bringing it to our attention...

Here is alittle more information that I was just sent on FB, Please - oh please - keep these families in your prayers and thoughts.
Today, in Riverside Wahington, a 12 year old boy named Brayden Hubbard threw his sisters to safety before he was crushed to death by a piece of runaway farm equipment. He was one of my son's buddies at Okanogan Middle School and they played football together. He displayed more heroism and did more good in the last 30 seconds of his short life than most will ever accomplish in the span of a lifetime. Godspeed Brayden

Yeah I heard about the Burn Barrel illegalities. . . Just a little shocked about the rainwater collecting thing. I mean, I don't care if you've got a water shortage in your area, you're only collecting rain that lands on YOUR property

Laws these days are just so . . . ridiculous.

Speaking of which, does anyone know if, now that election has passed, that law has passed saying we cannot trade or sell food without inspection of our farms/property?

I'm surprised at people backing out. There are a lot of contractors and construction people barely holding on, and building coops would be a good side line.

Quote:
Have you looked on the Portland CL? I have been looking for two years now on both Seattle & Spokane CL for someone to build me 4 to 6 bantam coops. These would be used during the breeding season and during the colder momths, the bantams would be in main (heated/insulated) coop.

I have cash and blueprints.

People either back out at the last minute (one guy AFTER I'd sent a deposit) disappeared and I've had others promise, promise, promise and not return my emails or phone calls....so I'm not sure...if you find someone who does a good job at a reasonable price, please let me know.
