What are you guys doing extra to keep everyone warm and cozy?? I was thinking of trying to put up some sort of wind break/temporary enclosure attached to the hen house. I am worried as we will be gone this weekend--starting tomorrow. worry worry worry. I DO have someone staying at our house but I just want to be as prepared as possible.

Winter Storm Warning for Okanogan & Omak

hide.gif

A WIND CHILL WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 4 AM TO 9 AM PST TUESDAY.

* WIND CHILL VALUES: -15 TO -25.

* TIMING: WIND CHILLS WILL DROP BELOW 0 THIS EVENING AND REACH THEIR COLDEST VALUES EARLY TUESDAY MORNING.

* LOCATIONS INCLUDE: OMAK...OKANOGAN...BREWSTER...BRIDGEPORT... OROVILLE...NESPELEM...DISAUTEL PASS

* IMPACTS: PEOPLE WHO ARE OUTDOORS TONIGHT AND TUESDAY MORNING SHOULD BE AWARE OF THE POTENTIAL FOR FROSTBITE ON EXPOSED SKIN.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WIND CHILL WARNING MEANS WIND CHILL VALUES OF 20 BELOW OR COLDER ARE LIKELY. THE COMBINATION OF THE BITTER COLD AND STRONG WINDS CAN FREEZE EXPOSED SKIN IN A MATTER OF MINUTES...SO DRESS WARMLY. LAYERS OF PROTECTIVE CLOTHING ARE MORE EFFECTIVE THAN A SINGLE LAYER OF THICK CLOTHING.

I'm on my way out to stack up some hay bales for my geese...to try to block some of this wind!!!

Just on the news.....BLIZZARD WARNINGS for the Eastern and S. Eastern Washington.....Spokane News. We dont' have the snow.... but do have the wind..BRRRRRRRR.

The plastic around the run sure keeps the temp up a degree or 2....it is funny how it is still cold, but not as bone chilling. I am looking forward to making the bird block.

So, so funny. My dogs do stuff like this too. I gotta find the photo with my old dog in HIS bed and 2 kittens that snuck in with him. Gosh dogs are funny. Chickielady....your puppy looks like a big goofy puppy...but I bet he will make a good dog.

(and wee have a Washington, NH too!)

ChickieLady asked me to post this flock block recipe for your folks!

eta: i should have mentioned this is the block i use to deworm the chickens in the fall! berries can be switched out for other seasons.

i don't really have a set recipe but here is what i do to make it.

1 bread loaf-i've been using whole wheat-if i can find it in stores i try to get organic
1+/- cup water (or pumpkin pie filling-may need more than a cup or just add a little water too)
1-2 table spoons minced garlic
2 cups of scratch/bird/sunflower seeds
1 cup pumpkin seeds
shredded carrots or frozen berries (optional)

i take the whole loaf of bread and rip it to small pieces and mix enough water/pumpkin filling to make it stick together but not too soggy. add all the ingredients till they all stick together without much falling apart. put in a bread loaf pan that has been greased with either olive oil or preferred cooking oil or spray, put in oven at 350 deg. for about an hour till it feels firm. depending on the size of your flock you can change the size of the pan to be larger or i have also done some blocks in my over-sized muffin pan. let the loaf cool some before giving to flock.

this recipe should make 2-3 loaves. i take and freeze the extras if i can't give them all in one day. or i throw them to the wild birds, squirrels and chipmunks that visit.

these blocks don't seem to last long if you take their food away the night before and feed it as a special treat in the morning. or if they just love treats you can see if they will attack it right away like my flock seems to do!

good luck and feel free to PM me if you have any questions. or you can also search for 'flock block' and you should find the thread about making them!

Thank you so much....I am looking forward to making this.

I am glad I put up insulation in the coop. I wish I could have bought another bale of pine shavings...they were out. I one pretty thick in there. I have heat lamp up. I hope it is enough. -25 that is scary. I'm going to check the ladies. Thanks for the info....I thought it might miss us.
