I am glad I put up insulation in the coop. I wish I could have bought another bale of pine shavings...they were out. I one pretty thick in there. I have heat lamp up. I hope it is enough. -25 that is scary. I'm going to check the ladies. Thanks for the info....I thought it might miss us.

Wal-Mart has the pine shavings, I just bought two bags today...I just checked, it's 26 in my coop and probably below zero outside (without the windchill, my thermometer says 10 degrees right now)!

Just remember to leave some water dripping in your house tonight so your water lines don't freeze!

Thank you for the reminder. I would have forgot...too worried about chickens. We just went in the coop and it is actually pretty warm. I moved the heat lamp a bit closer to them (they still have plenty of room to get out of the way). We also nailed up two suet bars up. I am going to make my own bird block. Feed store was out today.

Sheesh, am I the only western WA person online tonight?

Well, I kept my birds slightly warmer by closing the coop door (which usually never do) tucking up all the cracks with hay, surrounding the chick's area with hay, locking my Polish in their coop and covering almost the whole thing with black plastic, and allowing some of the girls to sleep in the nesting room. (for some reason it's a lot warmer there than any other building)

Oh, and of course, I stuffed the buck's (male goats) houses with extra hay for warmth, put some goat blankets on some of my does, and, well, my Yak is staying outside. . . Sorry mister, but Yaks are built for this kind of weather. And I don't want something wrong to happen to my goats. . . Its awfully dark in the barn, and the yak is acting really silly with the snow happening.

I put a second heat lamp in the greenhouse. Maybe it will keep it above freezing.

I love my garden. It comes right after my children and my husband. It's not work if you love it.

So had to drive today, about 60 miles and I didnt go more than 15 miles from my house. Its DARN cold outside! Wind has picked up and I think our power might go out. Nasty white out conditions here where I am at, can't see more than 15' in front of you, and walking is about imposible with the ice and wind. I'm gonna shut everything down and be minimalistic tonight. So have a great night, stay warm and dry! Stay off the roads if you can. Unfortunately I have to go out again tomorrow, but my DH has the next 3 days off!

Tanke care!

**********************Please everyone thank Chickie'sMoma for posting her recipe, I cannot waite to try it and Terrie's...but have not found Terrie's yet.
I put 2 heat lamps in my standard comb coop....it is at 45 and 32 outside...the rose combs are in a big insulated coop with no heat yet..I will work on that tomorrow.
I cannot complain of our warm 32 degrees !
But I have been there, the LAST winter I lived in Old Town it got to -30 for about 3 weeks in January, that after a total of accumulated 16 feet of snow (packed down to about 10 feet of solid ice
barnie.gif

Ended up having a block of about 8 foot thick on my roof....oh yeah did I mention it was super warm in my cabin ???
6 foot tall icicles that would touch the ground and start pushing UP....
Chickens freezing solid on the roost...

So I sold and moved !!!
