Just wanted to let you know that everyone here survived the night. Chickens are toasty warm in there coop, have thawed water and plenty of feed. Our power went out for the first time in 5 years today. Was out all day, came back on at 3:30 and is trying to go out again now. Its supposed to get down to 12* here tonight, roads are a complete mess, and people are STUPID! The power surge fried my fish tanks water pump, so I gotta make it out to petco in the next couple days... Ugg...

Will hopefully be back on later tonight, but if not, everyone take care and stay warm! Cause this isn't over yet.

If you decide to do hatching at a larger scale it is wise to get a generator or a battery back up. I have both. My incubator and hatcher are both hardwired into a UPS and when that dies, I have a generator.

This is what happened to me today:

All my outside birds made it through the night. I just got in from moving the ones in that I could. I have two special breeding quads outside and about 30-40 growing cockerels. Took hours to get them fed and watered this morning.

After I got everyone in that I could I went back inside my big building to check on everyone in there and my pet buff cockerel was dead. I think he broke his neck sparing with a couple of the cockerels I threw inside......

I cried my eyes out! He would follow me up and down the aisle as I fed and watered every morning and night. He was even getting bold enough to chase my kitty away from his cat food bowl. I'll miss him.

On a good note, I did ship some chicks to Puyallup last night and they showed up today a little after noon in great shape. I put two of the long term hot packs in there and sent seven extra chicks. The guy made out like a bandit because of the extras and the hot packs cost about $8 each. I was more concerned about their safety though.

I usually don't ship chicks this late in the year, but I had a rerunning auction on bidbird and they guy bid on them.... but everything worked out.​

Holy Moly!!! Brrrrr!!!!

My ducks do NOT like this cold snow thing! I put a heat lamp in their house on Sunday and have just left it on. The waterer and trough are froze so I have 2 smaller tubs that I have been dumping out and refilling about every 2 hours.

Our power went out for about 4 hours today so I was getting things ready to bring them in for the night! But luckily for me it came back on and so they have heat in their house again!They have ran around the yard twice today but they have decided to just stay in their cozy house instead!

I added extra shavings to the house and when I went out to get eggs this morning it was like needles in a haystack! But they didn't fail me! We had 3 eggs as usual!

ZGOATLADY!!!!!! We have missed you!!!! Glad you didn't have to drive bus in this junk! I called in on Monday, and they cancelled school for us today and tomorrow!!!

Oh Boy...Pips&peeps, so sorry about your fav roo, sounds like me with my GoldenCuckooroo I got from WA4-HPoultryMom last summer.
We were inseperable, and the little dickens followed me around, sitting on my shoulder and talking constantly, he would actually call me...it sounded like a bird voice saying "help!" and all mellow when I went to see what was up with him...he was a cry baby and other roos much smaller intimadated him.
After a while he realized when he cried for help I came running so he would sit all alone and cry...as if someone were beating up on him...then he got sick with the colibacilosis thing I went through and was gone.
Life was so quiet after that...so quiet.

I miss him still.
Some birds just steal your heart...others are just livestock.

I have a generator...and have never had to use it.
So far...what I need is an alarm that wakes me if the power does go out...Tamara has one and I want to know where she got it so I can get one too !
This weather is so scarey...this is not supposed to happen this time of year, makes me wonder what will happen when it is cold season !

Pips&peeps - You know what's ironic? The only ADULT bird of mine (or almost adult) that has been shivering out of control, huddled up against the heat lamp, and stealing the chicks' warmth . . . . . Is the Buff cockerel I got from you.

I think it is because he's lived through the very warm and sunny climate over in eastern WA with you, then suddenly got hit with cold temps like this and no warning. He's never been through frost or anything else before, at least here, so he's certainly NOT cold hardy, at least yet. . .​
