ok question... what to do with a frozen egg that has cracked the shell?
I forgot to collect eggs earlier today

now its frozen solid. I washed and placed in a small bowl to thaw..

So we still have power, temps outside are hovering at 17*, not the 13* that the weather service was calling for, but its still cold. Chloe and I are inside, my DH is next door standing next to the fire. Chloe's "almost" asleep, dogs are warm inside, I just checked on my girls, and their coop is nice and warm, even their water is still thawed. I'm glad I didn't have the time to build the addition to the coop yet, I'm sure with a larger space that the four of them would be much colder. Had to change the horses blankets this morning, as the ones they were wearing last night were frozen solid this morning. Poor things stood out there with a sheet of ice on their backs all night long. The winds were horid here last night, there was no way of turning your back to the wind. It was coming from all directions. It stopped snowing here at about 5:30 - 6 AM. In total we aquired just over 7" with drifts well over a foot deep. The roads around my house are 2" thick compact snow and ice. And I am not looking forward to my 6 mile drive in the morning, as it is all hills from where I live, unless I drive 30 miles around. lol

Called and checked on my gandma earlier, her power was still out at 10PM. But at least she has her propane heater, and neighbors who look after her.

Oh I am SO very glad that I wrapped my faucets, and plugged in the trough heater. What a mess this stom has caused.

So sorry for all the losses.

Just think of it this way. With this first storm, at least we will all have a game plan set for the next one. I had to point out the other day that we ARE NOT in winter yet. And if we are having this weather now, how is January going to treat us?

Let it thaw and cook it in the morning.

My husbands previous employer froze eggs all the time. Not sure why, but he did, and had no ill effects.

Man I wish I HAD eggs to forget to collect... My girls are holding out on me still.

Well the ducks had sense and headed in, the geese did not. After pulling two sebbies out of a snowbank they are all tucked in the garage for the night in an improvised pen. Cleaning up after them tomorrow should be fun, but the temps are below zero here tonight and I didn't want to risk losing any. As is one of the snowbank sebbies is acting off.

So much for geese having sense in cold weather!! I don't get it, last year they all headed in when it snowed or was chilly.

Your trees should be fine next spring. Most of the fruit trees should handle this weather. Also because the branches are still long, they will have room to be trimmed up come February.

They are kinda thawed now...and transparent as they froze solid with the sap still running.
I do not think they will survive, it was 18 at a low here last night, for a living tree to be put into an 18 degree freezer it probably killed them.

You may be surprised in the spring. We get below 0* every winter and my fruit tree did well until our goats found them.
