We have the same thing going on here with the sun... down in our 'holler'... bleeehhh.. The chickens usually follow a patch around their yard, but because of the snow they don't like to venture too far from their straw and hay carpets.

I have always loved the Tolbunt's coloring. Spangles is very cute too, even with her hair cut.

Also-- JB -- 'little puppy'--seriously?? that dog is HUGE! lol!!

And RFF~~hope your morning sickness goes away soon.. I had it with my son, all day everyday for 3 months. then like a switch it turned off. I couldn't be in the same room with a cantaloupe or cooked chicken. weird. Wonder what makes a body decide what is No Go, and what is safe. Like Salsa? I could eat that with a spoon right out of the jar. And you know, Cam LOVES hot food, always has--even as a little guy. double weird. He eats chicken and cantaloupe anyway, even though he rejected it for 3 months. lol!!

My grandma was from Missouri and she brought the tradition of collards with her. It was totally for prosperity. But I'm thinking back in the day, early days in Seattle like in the 30s she wasn't able to get collards in the markets in January. So, she converted it to cabbage. I am thinking this must be how it went anyway. So, now, Grandma's family, all of us cousins have to eat the cabbage before the end of January 1st. I have a little piece of cabbage in the fridge that I will take a nibble off of.
I must say tho that I am tempted to pass on this notion for this year. So far, I have been broke for too many years now.
Maybe if I just say no this year and see if things will change for the better.
OR, it could get so much worse.
Not experimenting this year. I will nibble cabbage tonight.

Help!!!
My Jersey Giant Rooster has a dislocated leg and is not walking.
I couldn't figure out why for the past few days but now i realized his leg is dislocated.

I isolated him with food and water. He ate the food hungry like, but no water (so far).
He has gone a few days like this...

How do i fix a dislocated leg?

no idea how with a chicken but a dislocated bone/limb needs to be adjusted back into socket. its hard on the critter and best done by someone with knowledge and strength (to be able to pull and manipulate)

sorry your birdie is hurt

update on my scalped rooster whom I've named Roadkill...

His scalp is almost completely healed! Only a small spot left to "grow" back. He is my sweetie now and follows me everywhere when I let him loose in the garden and I'm in there working. (garden is fenced off from the critters normally unless I put them in there)
He looks all sad if in the garden alone

but he does not get along with any of the others now. I tried to reintroduce the siblings but no one was happy about that! If the BLRW's and roadkill get along I might place him in their little coop (grow out coop). So far they have issues as well.

Update on my hatch for new years... I have quails coming out my ears at home now. i also have 2 more Buff Orp X rir and 3 more Buff Orp x leghorn chicks.

Still trying to understand the genetics on leghorns but I think its a dominate white. so far the ones I've hatched are white with buff splash or leakage. They are really pretty birds tho.. now to wait and see if temperament is leghorn or orpington..... so far the size is orpington....

I have not had time to read any posts. But I hope you all had a better new year than I did. And if you did not, I am sorry about this rant.

Can any of you guess what the FIRST thing I did on January 1st 2011? It wasn't the traditional smooch. Nope, no way, no how.... I got to mend fences at 12:01 AM. My Mothers fiance decided that it was a good idea to light off fireworks, and a 4" cannon. Well the cannon didn't spook the horses, but the stupid little package of fire crackers sure sent them ALL running! About a dozen bent and broken T posts frozen in the ground, had to re-run 4 lengths of 500' heavy gauge hot wire, my perimeter field fencing is possibly salvageable, but. I can't put it back up until the ground thaws enough to dig some holes. I'm switching my perimeter to wood posts instead of T-posts!!!

So until the ground thaws, I have a horse in my back yard... I'm not happy about that at all!

So I spent the first 20 minutes of the new year fixing a fence enough to hold in 3 horses overnight. And I spent ALL darn day long outside freezing my behind off, running a ton of hotwire. I guess it wasn't a horible start to the new year, but it sure was unexpected, and put a hold on everything that was suposed to happen today...
