Honestly no offense to the animal control but rarely do I ever get a straight answer from them. I think its mainly lack of info, if I ask 10 AC officers 1 same Q I normally get at least 8 different answers

I just got off the meat bird forum and there are 211 pages so before I sift through them to get info I thought I'd check here first.
I was looking into meat birds for processing and the white cornish are hybrids and can't breed, have bad legs etc but finish in 6 weeks. I've heard there is a slow grower also that isn't quite so bad. Are there any other breeds that are comparable? What is the difference betwen them and the red cornish? I want to raise a meat bird only, not a dual purpose that doesn't take 6 months to mature and doesn't have leg problems and can free range. Any one out there have experience in this area? Most the hatcheries only offer the cornish crosses but a few have others I don't know much about. Suggestions? and where is the best place to get them?

I would never ever go with Cornish X's, no matter how bad I want instant meat. . .

There are some new "freedom rangers" out now. I have no clue if they're considered dual purpose or strictly meat birds, but they're coming to be very popular. They're a healthy alternative that is self sustainable.

At our place, we're working on a bird that reaches a decent weight, but huge, but good weight and good meat at 4-5 months. That's why we're doing the Shamo x Marans, and possibly going to add some Araucana in there too. They'll end up looking a lot like really big Cornish birds. (real cornish, not Cornish X's)

I'm a patient person though. I'll wait 5 months for my meat birds, especially if the females sell well. That's why I'm aiming for certain parents in my Olive Eggers, because I want a perfect dual purpose of them in that the pullets are great layers of beautiful eggs, the cockerels are really meaty at a good 5 months. The Araucana I'm using is a very "chesty" bird and so far proving his worth in the Olive Egger project. My OE's from him are twice the size as my Easter Eggers, and at the same age. I love using Araucanas for meat though. . . The lack of tail adds to the breast, and also puts more ease in processing. Plus the yellow skin makes them look sooo tasty.

(real) Cornish from show quality lines are really good. They're not dual purpose, in fact they don't lay very much, but they're an old breed with a LOT of meat and decent growth rate.

Chickielady - I don't read a lot, but when I get a chance to, I'll always have my nose in some non-fiction. I really don't care for fiction/novels though. But science books and the sort. . . Wish I had more than I do. Too bad they're so expensive to buy and there's so few or I've already read all of the ones in the library.

OK but I think you are not mature enough to remember the Jetsons. You must have heard about this from somebody else.

I loved M*A*S*H*. Cheers was on too late and I was not allowed to watch it. Jetsons was a good one too. And Flintstones.

Oh, that is a good one too.....we are all old. aren't we?

I believe you and I are close in age noted from FB. My wife is 9 years younger then me. She does not remember the Jackson 5 record on the back of cereal, I think it was Sugar Smacks.

Funny. My DH is 9 years older than me. I remember having a Jackson 5 lunch box.

Since I was in "special ed" due to my speech therapy and my hearing (I'm hard of hearing)
I got to have a special day with JP Patches and Aaron Brown for the day at school in 3rd grade.

I think the thought behind it was that the "normal kids" might come associate with us if we had someone who they wanted to meet.
the next year I was back in "normal" classes and just pulled out of class for a 1hr or so for the speech therapy rather then in "special class".

I think the "special class" was a blast as I got to hang with a bunch of local sports stars and etc who donated time to the schools.

DH talks about JP patches all the time - loved him (he did - clowns creep me out)...but anyway. He and his boy scout troup sold the most light bulbs and got to meet JP Patches too. DH wants to know if you were a "Patches Pal"?

BLRW are not an accepted color for showing...they look like alright birds if you're just starting out....where did you get them?

you can still enter them for fun and so that people can see them who might not otherwise. I do that with the MFC's--you just enter them under AOV. Dan had a couple of his BLRW's at the last show. I LOVE that coloring, very stunning I think. It's fun just to see how the judge will place them within their variety.

The man I bought my first horse from (I still have her, she's 19 years old) was in Paint Your Wagon. He was one of the guys driving a HUGE mule train. I've never watched it all the way through.
