JB - I looked a lot like you when I was younger.

This very interesting, and I think it is a complement, because I am fairly sure that I am older than you. I am now over 50.

We've yet to try it in WA, but yes, we'll be doing a lot of three sisters this year. Very excited for it too.

Three sisters is an ancient method of growing vine beans, squash, and corn in one crop. The old method of doing it is by building mounds and growing each very closely to each other, per mound. The beans give off a lot of nitrogen, which corn and squash hunger for, while the squash help block out sunlight to the ground, preventing weeds from growing. The corn helps to keep the beans up without the need of a pole. (the beans grow up the corn stalks). It's a wonderful cycle and also prevents mono-cropping issues that lead to pests.

cool ! I am not doing corn though, but I do 3 or 4 kinds of pole beans and climbing peas...think that will work ? We do not have open tilled feilds here, we have the 100 acre wood, thick forst and we in the center..so all the garden is in raised beds.
Oh, and spied my monster gopher is back in town !!!

I need a big gopher eating cat, that will not eat my chickens !

thanks Illia! I been a busy girrrl at home! Just catchin up on The Board.... I think it will be fun to try. I am pretty limited on space, and have always wanted to do corn..this gives me a way to try it.

hmm.. how about a muscovy CL? lol!

My crew of nasty little dogs are so jealous of the food that toss to the chickies. In fact I made a squash/apple salad with goat cheese for dinner, and the poor nasty little dogs are gagging down the leftovers.

You can make your own Starter by putting 1 large can of Fruit Cocktail and 3 cups of sugar in a 1 gallon jar, stir well, let it set on your counter for 1 week. If you want, add 1/4 cup of any brandy. Use a dishtowel with a rubber band to keep out flying critters. Yarn or some kind of string will also work. Don't put a lid on it. You don't need the brandy. Sugar & fruit setting on the counter for 21 days, this will walk!!!

1st Day 1 1/2 c. starter
1-2 1/2 size can peaches (syrup & all)
2 1/2 c. sugar

7th Day Add to Above
2 1/2 c. sugar
1-2 1/2 size can pineapple ( chunk or crushed or tidbits)

Let stand 7days stir daily

14th Day Add to above
2 1/2 sugar
1- 2 1/2 size can fruit cocktail
1 8 oz jar marichino cherries

21st Day Drain Fruit divide into 4 parts
[save liquid to give your friends 1 1/2 c. a piece to use as a starter for their own cakes]
to each part of drained fruit add
1 Cake mix of your choice
1 box vanilla instant pudding
4 eggs 1 tsp vanilla
2/3 c. shortening
1 c. nuts (optional) Stir & Bake

350% for 1hour in tube or bunt pan

You can ice it or make a glaze and drizzle it over the cake.

I found this on a Google search. I haven't tried this version of friendship bread starter.

This is the recipe I have. Just trying to find out if jbear starter is the right one.

jbear doesn't have this starter, she has the Amish sourdough type.

Are you on the left in the photo? Straight hair and glasses? I'm in my 40's, quit counting when I hit it a few years back.

Yep that is what nasty little dogs look like.

Okay not really. They are Yorkies.

So how many tamales can you make with those little guys ???

I have been known to tell my dogs that they are edible. I am sure that I could get 4 to 6 tamales out of the two of the baby nasty little dogs.

I am sure that I am grateful that I am just not the hungry.

Chickielady, beans and squash should pair up just fine. The beans will still offer squash their required nitrogen, but just make sure that the beans, if the pole/vine type, have a pole to climb up. Other than that, it should work out just fine!

What sort of corn and squash do people prefer to grow out here?

We covered the insulation panels this fall with cardboard sheets. So far I don't see any evidence that anyone is eating the cardboard. We got the cardboard sheets when we bought the washer and dryer this past spring.

Yep that is me on the left. I am 51 now. I look a lot like my mother, and carry to much weight just like my mother. But my mother has gorgeous skin, and doesn't look her age. My MiL and FiL also look much younger than their ages.
