Heather: Isn't this crazy. The weather is nuts. It was so nice yesterday we went and did a bit of spring cleaning (I guess it would have been pre-spring since it is not officially spring yet).

I see that you will be having lots of chicks this spring....do you raise just for show and fancy breeds? Or do you sell some of your "culls" to us small-time farm type? Again, we just have pets with perks...we like the fresh eggs and they get garden treats and all the bugs they want.

I wish it would stop raining.

Yes I'll be doing some major hatchin' this year....now that I think I have the "strength" to eat any extra roos I can't sell....

I do have "fancy" breeds and I do show....some are better layers than others. I do have a 1 year old Light Sussex hen for sale she's laying well but has too much excess black on her back for me to show....so I'm selling her and she's laying now.

Edited to add: YES! I almost always have culls that have too much white, the wrong pattern, a funky comb, a crooked toe, etc. But they would be happy & healthy productive members of a laying/backyard flock without any issues.

I usually don't sell chicks until they are a few months old so I can sex them and pick out my keepers from the culls...unless I do a custom hatch then they go right away because it's something I am planning to keep & breed for myself.

I totally understand needing to wait until the chicks are older (not sure what they are called) to see what needs to be culled and what can be kept for future watching. I would love to be able to get a couple of hens from you. I would be afraid to buy the Sussex hen right now as I don't have a really nice place to keep her for quarantine - that is warm. I am not even sure what a Sussex looks like - you guys show so many breeds all the time....I will do research so I know what kind these are...

Okay, I just went and googled Sussex hens....how pretty...now I want her.

I am just concerned about having a warm place for her.

Now I'm excited.

poor little bugger, all his brothers and sisters are still in their eggs....little duckle is all alone...
He/she loves to snuggle and get up in your shirt and hide..
Then he does little peeps and dabbles your skin like tiny kisses....so adorable.

I gave him/her a big soft clean sock curled in a doughnut so he can get in it and snuggle.
Sure needs some siblings!

This tiny creature is the cutest thing I have ever seen.
And he is imprinting me...and at 1 day old today, he runs standing up tall, to find me.
OMG...I am duckielady

BTW- Just because it's on my mind. I'm tired of my 20 yo Honda being tempermental. Think I'm going to buy a new car Saturday.

You guys and that gooey chocolate bread earlier got me thinking I wanted to bake some kind of goodies. So I decided to wing it and see what I came up wiff. I had some frozen razberrie puree so I thawed it. Ran some walnutz through the mini choppa. Mixed the walnutz with some oats about 50/50. Added some margarine, brown splenda and regular splenda and of course had to throw in a couple gluggs of honey just for good measure. Mixed this all in the Kitchen Aide. I spread a layer on the bottom of a baking dish then put the berry puree over. Then I sprinkled the last bit of the nut and oat mix and topped that with a few more plain oats. I should have baked a bit longer as it was pretty gooey. Or maybe I should have thickened the berries. But hey for just throwin it together it WAS (note the key word there) pretty tasty. Woulda been better if I had a little topping like icecream or coolwhip. Don't think it is a good candidate for REAL whipped cream, my favorite.

So I'm reading the usda web page. Heres the link. You have to scroll through to page 9. And read the weight classes for consumer grades for shell eggs...

http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/getfile?dDocName=STELDEV3004376

I will try to type it up to make it easier for everyone, but will take me some time...

Thanks I printed it but I also found a pic of an egg scale and printed it. Much easier to follow !!!
I was able to weigh the one smaller egg we have from the RIR banties and it is 41g that is almost a small.
celebrate.gif
So I think that the larger one we been gettin may go a small or light med. I also weighed some of our big girl eggs and they were all 90g +.

Packs of a dozen eggs are weighed as 12 eggs, not individually.
So you could have a few Jumbos, a handful of large, a few medium and a pee wee or two that would make up the weight of that particular size of dozen eggs.
Fun, huh ?
People usually love the different sizes and colors, after being subjected to identical eggs in color and size, odd ball sizes and colors are a delight !
