Oh, and Diane, the eggs are doing great, I am going to candle them tonight.
Then we will know how many are doing and how many aren't...
Russ.............the avatar is fantastic!
Chickielady has been very busy, completely cleaned out all the floor bedding in the big coop...dumped in the compost, then opened a new bale of shavings and spread it around, in the Cochins, the Javas and the RIW coops that occupy that house.
I did the Cuckoos last week, next is the Ameraucanas coop.
It has been raining so did not do bonsai...
I like to do bonsai and then put the thing somewhere and forget about it, and then one day look at see it, and enjoy it.
I also went in the brooder house, and cleaned the babies pen, and did new shavings, and then got the "Kill A Watt" and plugged it into the socket, and plugged the 1500 into it, and started it up.
The 1500 is the professional model like the Sportsman incubator, but the 1500 has no hatching drawer underneath..so from now on to prevent confusion I will just call it a sportsman.
Anyway, the "Kill A Watt" is a little device with a digital readout that measures how many watts a thing is using, pretty cool.
A so far, the sportsman uses 60 watts just fan, and the turner on it uses 104 watts and with the heat coils going it uses a top of 310 watts, and that goes on & off according to the thermostat.
That ain't bad at all.
I am trying to see how many the big sportsman uses, vs the two little incubators.
So far, the sportsman uses less than the 2 little ones.
Today, 36 eggs are being shipped here, and they will go in the sportsman.
I still have FiL's giant Farm Master incubator down in DHs Fort.
It is not being used and I have to work on it.
Dad says it works, but he took the wafer therm system out, and installed a electronic therm system...and so not it has an lectrical wall switch on the outside to turn it on and off, looks weird.
The Farm Master may just be used as a brooder later on....I do not think I need both giant incubators !
I was going to convert my little chest freezer into a brooder..it has such good insulation properties and it is critter proof...DH drilled a hole into the coils when he tried to attach a hasp in order to be able to lock the little freezer, and when he did he killed the coils and all the stuff blew out
..a costly mistake, but I got a much bigger chest freezer out of the deal.
So a heat lamp attached inside, and some big air holes may make a perfect brooder ?
So far, the sportsman is right on with temp..I am impressed with it.
It does have a fan inside that can blow you away, and it makes enough racket that I think it may need a new fan someday...has a whip wobble I guess.
The turner is doing fine..so far so good !
Any sign of our CR ??
It is tea and shower time for me.
Tacos for dinner..and we have had windy, gusty drizzly all day.
No holes in freezer and it makes a great feed storage bin!
