Main thing is what do you want in what order...
Egg layers? size? colors? egg colors? temperament? forgers? show quality? a show breed?
I would then get 1 or 2 birds of each breed you like. Then figure from there where you want to go after you have a little to go on..
There are many here in the area who have great amazing birds also many of us who have egg laying mutts so you will have your pick.
Thanks for the reply Rainwolf! I guess I like the big breeds, that are hardy, will lay well in our soggy weather, meat isn't my main focus cause I'd have to get more backbone first. And if my kids could get their feet wet raising and showing that would be a plus. So from here do I search out 4-H people to try to find birds? How do you go about finding breeders in your area? Thanks for your time! Hope I'm not acting to much like a new egg but I am what I am
If you really want nice birds, ChickieLady is just a bit west of you and she has some very nice birds. There are others around that also have very nice birds. Most of figuring out what you want comes from what you want to do with the birds. If you want to show, or get kids into 4-H then go for the breeders birds.
But if all you are looking for is some eggs then hatchery birds are fine. All of my birds are hatchery stock, and the eggs are great. It also doesn't freak me very much out to loose one. I would be a lot more upset if I had spent a lot of money and then loose one. I still want to cry if the one the dies is a favorite. I haven't lost anybody for a long time now, but sooner or later something will happen no matter how well you care for your birds. I have picked up most of mine through the feed stores.

I so agree. I got a number of different kinds of birds, and soon found that some of the breeds were not what I really wanted after all. I also have a few that I would love more of.
