! a few years back, our oldest daughter made a horse quilt and took 1st at our spring youth fair. It was her first. She did a great job, was proud of her.(can ya tell:D) Then she decided to put it in a youth aution to raise $ money for her youth group. Honorable, yes. But I had to fight a lady to the death(the death of my checkbook) to get it back! So it now proudly resides at home:) If i can figure out how to post a pick, I show ya'll. Thanks for lettin a mama hen fluff a bit. My chick is almost 18 and will soon be flyin my coop. Most days makes me sad, then she remembers that she's still a teenager and I renew the ad for a good single guy lookin for a bride!

I have the 5 tray and love it; works great! Only I wish it had more trays.

I grew up in California (Bay Area) and there was an old abandoned apricot orchard on the hill above our house. We'd go there many times each summer for the sweetest apricots, and we'd dry them on our balcony in the sun on these huge drying racks my dad built - enough to cover the balcony. These trays are puny in comparison; and I have never been able to find apricots as sweet as those.

OH YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!
And FiL has alot of acerage in walnuts, almonds, and apricots!!
And the apricots ripen in April, so we time our visits

The walnuts in November (Turkey Day) and the almonds in about September..so we make many trips up & down I-5....

My brother used to live near San Juan Bautista on the road to Fremont Peak. He had a couple of acres of walnuts. Sure miss them, but at least he can breathe now. He and I are both very allergic to walnut pollen but can eat the nuts just fine. Miss the lemons too. We grew Myers and I'd bring sacks of them back to WA after visiting family for the holidays. I squeeze them and freeze the juice in ice cube trays to use year-round.

The apricot orchard by us was about a 2 mile walk up a pretty steep hill, the walnuts were at the top of the hill in the Santa Teresa foothills. I remember everyone being so tired and cranky when the apricots were ripe because mom had us each hauling 2 5 gallon buckets of the fruit down the hill nearly every day until all the trees were picked. It was a pain in the applesauce, and we all had huge calluses, and I'm sure it is the reason why all 3 of us kids have arthritis in our hands now! But I guess it could have been worse ... the apricots could have been at the base of the hills and out house at the top!

We made jams and jellies, sauces, and dried fruit. The Cottle Road IBM where my dad worked had an old orchard of Italian plums that they allowed their employees to harvest, so we picked those as well. That was easy - flat gound, and the car was nearby!

I tried to find the appricot orchard on Google Earth - it is naw a golf course:(

Oh, and we did almonds too .... we only knew where one tree was partially up the hill where an old house had once stood. They were easy enough to gather and carry home, but mom is from Holland and the Dutch like to put Marzipan in all their deserts, so we would have to peel them, blanche them, and make them into Almond Paste - We had the flavor just perfect, but ours was always chunky compared to the buckets of Blue Diamond almond paste mom used to buy before she found the tree.

There isn't a show in Monroe this weekend. Chickielady's son lives up here so she's coming to visit him and she is bringing me some birds and kefir grains on her way by as I live in Monroe too.

Somebody please fill broodytood in about the show in Stevenson I think it is soon but don't know any details. I don't think it is much difference in distance than Monroe and much nicer drive from Chehalis.
