See this is what I was trying to figure out. lol Where and how to brood them outside of my house. I have no problem having them in the house for the first week or two, but after that, when they need more space. I like to move them "out," so they have more space.

When I brood in the summer, they are outside from 4-7 days old, in a big rubbermaid tub, with a screen lid and heat lamp. Once they outgrow that, I have a 4x8x2.2' juvenile pen. Intergration starts here, as my older flock free ranges. They would just have fencing between them...

But back to reality. Its winter. And my normal set up just isnt going to work. SO... I need to figure out what to put them in, until they are feathered out...

I'm toying with the idea of converting my DD's old wooden crib into a brooder. lol

Great plan CL. I know somebody who built a large shop/garage with mass storage up stairs. got it inspected and signed of. Guess what they are using it for storage. They store themselves and houshold furnishings in it.

The inspector actually said as he was leaving " you know what goes on behind closed doors is none of my business"

We just had a nice little get the ole heart pumping incident. DW and I were setting here in the living room and all of the sudden there was a big boom and windows rattled. Sceert the cackle spackle out of us the dog and the bird. I went out and saw nothing asked the neighbor and she didn't hear anything. I came back in and as I looked out the kitchen window I got a clue...... There was mud and redish brown feathers on the window. I suspect it was one of CL's Robins. It's a wonder it didn't break the window as hard as it hit. I went out spectin to find said culpret but aparrently it was a hit-n-fly.

If and when I ever get chicks. I'm planning on putting a tote in a big dog crate. I'll set it up in the laundry/utility room. Mr. Hallerlake thinks I should use the wine closet, but there's no outlet in there for the heat lamp. The dog crate is to keep the cats from getting too close.

I've noticed some people have an incubator and a hatcher. What is that about?

I had a chicken or 2 that would lay while roosting... the weirdest site was seeing the egg balanced on the roost all by its self....

upon closer inspection i have discovered the hens are part engineers. they use poop at super glue. the hen would poop, lay egg, sit till morning and then leave the egg there......

My roosts are old tree fruit props so circumference varies from 1 inch to 4. but still seeing an egg on a round roost is weird. that hen is gone now... but i do get one every few months under the roost but not sure if it is laid on the ground or up above....

Well, MOT has been captured, dusted and banded, and I will give him afew baths in the next weeks...he is a very happy #1

I decided while I had him, to grab the 3 pullets and dust and do them too, and WD-40 their legs & feet..just to make sure

Seems like the old birds use the dust bath and never see mites , but the young birds have not quite got the hint yet.
I then moved the red lamp into the Cuckoo Marans coop, and plugged it in, the 4 old feather legged hens will get their 2 new feather shanked and toed Silver Cuckoo Marans flock sires tonight by the light of the silvery moon, dusted of course

..they need to go out into the world !
The older chicks get to move into their pen, and the babies 2 weeks old go into their pen, and the new babies next week will have that pen

So, we are on for the show and bringing Mr MOT.
Sun is out here now, let's hope it stays that way !
