is shotweed that nasty stuff that has white flowers and when it goes to seed.. if you pull it the seeds literally SHOOT off of it?? i hate that stuff...

Unfortunately, it is true. I googled it just to make sure my brother wasn't pulling my leg. (Both truck drivers perished ... the one who was at fault must have died at the hospital because he was still alive but in poor condition when my brother got there). It happened in May 2000, so not as long ago as I thought. It happened on the pass near Gilroy. The grass was not completely dry yet, so the fires were easily contained (Thank God it did not happen a month later!) I remeber thinking how horrible it was that the innocent driver and many chickens died because the tanker truck driver was inattentive, yet at the same time, seeing a potential Gary Larson Cartoon with the tequila and the chickens.

That would be great! I'd love the melts to be made of beeswax either plain or a tiny amount of natural fragrance.

And good morning to all. I see it's raining again already. The coop is so close to being finished this is a little frustrating. I'm pretty excited though - DH and I are headed to a free workshop put on by City of Tacoma Public Works. The workshop is on "Starting Seeds & Garden Planning". Pretty basic stuff for most of you I know, but I've never had much of any kind of gardens and we wanted to try and grow a few things this year. I'll have to figure out a way to block it for when the girls are out free ranging, but I am also planning on planting some special boxes just for chicken goodies. I'm hoping that my plan to cover it with screening and just let them eat the vegetation growing through the top will work.
The city will be continuing their free workshops all spring, on composting/worm bins (also new to me), soil prep and planting seedlings, rain garden how-to, pest management, spring cleaning with greener cleaners, and even Backyard Chickens!
This is all pretty exciting stuff for me. And best of all it's free!

So, this is a little premature, but here's the coop so far. Please ignore the mess. Hopefully, we're just a few days and a few tension filled "discussions" from it being finished. I did tell DH I truly appreciate how hard he's been working to get the project finished. He is a good guy with the very best intentions and he's put in some LONG hours so far!

Shotweed, not shortweed. It's the one with the little white flowers. If you try to pull it when it has seeds, the seeds shoot all over. I've gotten seeds in my eyes.

I knew what you were referring to. I had always heard the plant called Johnny Jump-ups. But Shotweed made sense to me. I do know it is a pain in the heiney. I don't have as much this year, as I did last year. It really exploded after I brought in some Tagro a few years ago. I have finally gotten rid of most of the weeds from the Tagro.
