she is such a funny girl!! congrats on your teeny tiny eggie!
here she is laying her egg on top of the china hutch... remember I told you she would pace outside the slider until I let her in to hop up there and lay her egg...

Dang! That is how my BR hen was, she would pace & scream until someone opened the washing machine lid so she could get inside...

funny how they each have a different personality. at least mine do. They can be quirky!! I have one that you dont dare try and eat lunch around, she has no problem flying up and snatching your sandwich right out of your hand lol now if she would just teach those brats of hers to sleep in the roost instead of the nest boxes...

off to go candle my eggs that sat for 12 hours with the bator off....wish me luck...

I was reading a thread the other day where someone put their chick in a gallon ice cream container, with a margarine sized dish of baking soda, then poured vinegar over the baking soda and closed the lid. It creates a gas, someone help me here - and it puts the chick to sleep. I don't know if I can find that thread now. Perhaps someone else knows what I'm talking about and can explain it more clearly.
I thought maybe I'd saved it for future reference but can't seem to find it now...
Sorry Broody - I'm hurting right along with you.

If you do a search for chicken euthanasia or Small animal euthanasia a few sites will come up. It's kind of invloved for just one chick. I think it's 2 T baking soda and 1 cup vinegar but they talk about 'chambers' and pouring slowly etc. It just makes them go to sleep and not wake up. Creates a gas. I tried it for a chick and an older bird. Only worked for the chick. A lot of people pop the neck on the chicks, it's quick though. I'm just afraid I will either pull too hard or not hard enough. Ick, never easy.

If the goal is a quick end to life, is there such a thing as pulling too hard? Even if you pull the head off (sorry for those who are sensitive of stomach) it is a quick dislocation. I'd rather pull hard and fast and end it quickly than try to pull just the right amount and risk not doing it right. In chicks, this is my preferred method.

Sounds like the chick had wry neck. In hatchlings it can be a genetic issue. In older birds it is sometimes a nutritional issue. I had 12 eggs shipped from Maryland. Had a great hatch, 9 out of 12. Six had wry neck. Really really sad. They could not eat or drink and had their heads so far over their back they would flip over. I had to cull them. Not easy. The three without wry neck I gave away to pet homes. Not saying that is what your chick had, Just sounds like it to me.

Wry neck the neck goes around to the side, star gazers only look straight up, and wiggle their heads back & forth on their back, often falling over backwards.

In silkies wry neck often results in head between legs and walking backwards. Not believed to be genetic, but the result of injury, and occurs mostly in adults.

We met with the oncologist this afternoon. Mother is in stage two pancreatic cancer; advanced localized. She's not a candidate for treatment even if she wanted it, which she doesn't. I'm not sure she realized that pain management was the only alternative to chemo, radiation, and surgery.

I am so sorry. Have they talked about palliative care to provide a better quality of life for the time left, and possibly extend her life? I am so glad palliative care, and hospice, have come a long way in the past decade.

OI,.. edited typo. Darn butterfingers

I started with 23 eggs, had 3 blood rings early on. tossed those. bator got shut off on day 12, candled today, day 14. had 7 clears and 1 more blood ring. the rest are all dark with air cells. cant see them moving but I am not that good at it anyway. lockdown is last day of the month. hope I get something...

I think its a great idea, but think we should just make one.. What do you think?

DH has looked into it, but the fact is, if enough of us go in, it will be cheap.
If I make one, what will you do?
You gonna make one too?
Is everyone going to make their own?
If I make one you want to borrow it ?

Exactly why I thought she should contact pips&peeps who happens to have one for sale for WAY less money!

You should warn us before you post that much happiness - mother ducks and duckings and sunshine all in one photo is too much to absorb! Sweet photos...

Thank you! I love the pictures that I took. I dont have them any longer, but they sure were fun! And last spring our duck population exploded from 4 to 28! lol Nothing cuter than little ducky fuzzy butts!
