That is what Indian Runners were bread to do...2000 yrs ago in Bali, till now.
The duck herders lead one or two hundred ducks to the padi fields in the morning, they eat anything that moves, and what grains is left on the ground. Once cleared, they move on to another field.
Tummies full, they are then walked all the way back home. The next day, eggs collected, the ducks walk to another field. They are able to clear skeets, crane fly larve, slugs, snails, creepy crawlies, even locust.
They also eat dandelions. And the extra bonus is the fertilizer. I hose down the tractor's foot print every morning and push it to a new spot and the grass goes nuts after a week.
Reason I got them is beacuse I am a gardener that happen to pick up mother earth news and they said...."ducks are a gardener's best friend"

But they knew I couldn't let those yellow fluff balls go once I lay my hands on them. LOL

well nothing but bad luck this week.

got home friday. was a couch potato with the dogs. i wake up saturday morning to mom telling me our foster dog "Rufus" jumped off the deck and is missing. so yesterday afternoon i hiked for a long time looking for any trace of him (nothing but deer and elk poo).... oddly i found a fresh dead owl. its either a spotted or a horned. he is in the freezer right now. working on finding out if the local college wants it or try contacting WSU if they want one. its in good condition. it apparently had only died yesterday morning. i will try to get pics. it seemed a little under nourished or a possible broken wing.

last night i felt haunted while sleeping. the ows were very social and seemed to be getting closer.... mom says they were probally looking for their friend.
so didn't find the dog but found a dead owl. i am hoping someone picked him up because we didn't see anything on the highway. he escaped at 7:30 AM yesterday. today before i leave back to WSU me and my boyfriend are going to work on putting up more dog fencing on the deck to prevent future base jumping dogs.... mom and dad are really upset by him disappearing. (i am too but also i think the anti depressants keep me kinda numb on this, for that sadly i am grateful)

if anyone knows of a school or government learning center that would like an owl to add to their collection let me know.

i think it might be either a small great horned, a spotted or (doesn't look like the chicken kind) a barred owl. i will post pics when i can.

also found out that another cousin died thrusday. so now there is another funeral next week.

3 funerals in less than 70 days..... not cool

i really hope this is it for now. there is no one left (ATM) in my family with cancer and hopefully my grandma and her 2 remaining sisters can stay in good health ( i would like my grandma to see me graduate college)

my parents are getting burnt out, along with my other relatives. some couldn't go to the last funeral (too soon too painful) and the worst part was everyone saw ron last week at the last funeral, and then he is gone.

yesterday while working at a booth for the pear festival in leavenworth there were 2 separate incidences where the people were or had attended one of our familys funerals. one person was a neighbor to the first one that died. and another had my cousin as a pricipal when he was a kid.... these were both strangers to us yet we are connected by a person whose funeral we had or will be going to....

this is too small of a world......

no depressing news here... to sick and even more sick and tired of the rain to be able to cope with it anymore. so I am going to go ride today, watching my hatch, have 4 out now and 6 more pipped and gathering strength to get out. 3 being lazy... c'mon baby orps!! oh and Carol says I have all blues as the eggs that are hatching are from a splash x blue. so yaaay!! blue orp babies!!

Hmmm.... so we had the bator at a goo 99*-100* yeasterday at JB's house and now I have it set up at my house and can not for the life of me get it to dial in!!!!

I got the humidity down to 60% but that is still too high, right?

Maybe I was just not meant to incubate my own ducklings! I really need a set it and forget it incubator for dummies! I'm so frustrated! I really want to put the eggs in today!

Last year I went there bright & early at 9am and came home with my Sion packed I couldn't close the door. This year, I'm bringing our Tundra.

They have fuchias, vegetables, flower baskets, angle's trumpets, perenials, annuals, in six packs, 4 inches, gallon pots etc etc...did I mention veges???? All kinds of peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, lettuces, cabbages, tomato wanabies, and big flowering bush things. All at really reasonable prices.
Anybody??
We can meet there and wait for them to swing open the gates.

They have those super big flat bed carts.

My DS will be in school and DH will be at work...hehe

Just take a walk at Flower World or Molbaks. You'll see the plantaholics carts loaded with stuff.

Sky Nursery and Swanson's are closer. The problem here is lack of heat. Cool weather vegetables do wonderfully. Warm weather vegetables can be iffy. Look for the ones with the shortest number of days to maturity. They are likely to do best.
