Silkies are probably the easiest to handle, but aren't the best free ranging types- require predator secure coops. The same thing works to the advantage of a kid- the bird doesn't run because it doesn't see them coming (although most don't seem to care too much either way. Very docile birds... in fact, I'm spoiled with the docility of my breeds of choice. So laid back.
I dont have much experience with Silkies. But the one silkie hen that I have is completely oposite of what you describe. She is an awsome forager, is constantly watching for the Eagle, osprey, hawk, ect... Does not like to be anywhere near a person, and gods forbid you try to pick her up!
See this little smiley? Well that would be here! She is the crabbiest little fuzz ball I have EVER met. lol Now she might just be a freak, as alot of my critters tend to be. But I have the exact oposite of what you discribed. lol
Really you must have the freak, all the Silkies we have ever had have been kid friendly, but I have to say they all have been good foragers and smart... I'll never be with out one.. Our first one was white and my mom named her LULU the french dancer..
