I have the perfect breed for the weather here in WA!...................... DUCKS!!!!!

Can ducks and chickens live together? I keep pondering the idea of ducks, they're so darn cute! But I just wonder how they would do with my chickens? Also if chickens are carriers of bugs that can kill the ducks. Like I know you can't keep chickens and turkeys together because of the blackhead illness.

I wanna duckie so bad though

hahaha

Sure...why not? You just need to give everyone non-medicated chicken feed and give the ducks a tub of water to bath in. They take daily baths.
My ducks do not perch, so they need a nest at floor level. They also don't eat that much feed as they forage for slugs & crawlies. Love dandelions. I actually have to go out of my place to "harvest" dandelions for them today.
Wonder what will happen if one stuck a duckling under a broody hen??

thanks Blue duckies, but they are too far away!
Need to find a puppy down there.
I research the SPCA web site and found several nice breed puppies and the adoption rules are outrageous, they want to proof you are a homeowner, they come to visit to make sure you have a fenced secure yard.
They (in some places) want proof you are employed or proof of income.
On top of that, you have to have multiple visits to make sure the dog likes you and that you like the dog.
Then to top that off, they charge adoptions fees from $200.00 to as much as $500.00 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They also want proof you have a vet, and will call that vet office to make sure you have an account or are "established" with that vet office (???so what if you have never had an animal at this vet office???)
They are making it very difficult to adopt an animal.
Some places even have "surprise" visits, in where they pop in to your house unannounced to check on the animal.
I sometimes think the best way to go is a breeder, or the child at the entrance to safeway with the box of puppies.
Something you rarely see anylonger.
These "pounds" also charge to drop animals off (surrender) and old or special needs animals can cost a bundle to drop off there for adoption.
Things are getting so expensive & complicated everyday.

congrats on the plans...hope it will go smoothly now for you.

BTW: There are lots of kids with boxes - outside Safeways and Wal*Marts- here in the Okanogan County. Largest County in the state and there is not one Government funded animal rescue or shelter. It is all done my volunteers and donations - 100%. It is awful some of the things I have seen. They rescued 22 cats from a woman who was living in her car - WITH THE CATS IN THE CAR. That was a mess.

22 cats in her car in Okanogan in this cold ??????????????
Guess the cats kept her somewhat warm...but where/how did they potty ?
Oh that is horrible to think about not just the cats but the poor woman.
There are way too many cats being bred, that's for sure.
Every pound I have surfed must have 20 adult cats and 20 kittens in it.
That and at least 20 pitbull terriers and american bull terriers...pitbulls and cats.
That and a few pitbull/cross puppies are about 90% of every animal shelter I have surfed.
People sure do need to spay/nueter.
Course when times are tough as they have been lately, the animals are the first to suffer, in food, shelter & vet care.
It is hard to justify a $400 spay bill when you cannot pay your mortgage or feed your kids.
Sad.

well, I am going to go try to eat something...I will be back later on, everyone have a great day, I can actually see a bit of blue sky through the clouds......do I dare hope for sun ???

Maybe you can recruit the help of your FIL to build you that very big barn.

Do you have a limit as to what you can spend on a puppy? I can peruse the ads here in Spokane and check SCRAPS. I think it is around $75.00 to get a puppy here. This includes the license, shots and a certificate to get the animal spayed or neutered.

With all the people on this site, we can find a way to get one to you!

2 years ago, we thought our MIL was needing a companion lap dog and bought her a purebread Shi-zhu puppy. Well, we had to turn around and sell it quick because she did not want it. She said she is too "old" to take care of a dog full time. She will borrow ours if she needs one.

Lesson learned.
Maybe shell take a laying duck that likes to follow her around the house.

Comes with an auto feeder & waterer.

Just needs to learn to poop on command like my brother's parrot.
