Get your jam jars out & start filling your thermos with some hot water. You canfill the jam jars & keep the bator warm if you have to. They can last for hours if you don't touch or open the bator. Then when the temp drops too low, stick in a hot water bottle quickly.
I think someone said you can put a thick blanket over it to keep it warm too. Or there is plan "B--".

How many eggs did you say you have?

You might have to get 2 helpers.

Well, I am going to bed. We have 2 that have pipped. And the latest one that has pipped is throwing a party inside that shell. she/he is madder than blue blazes...keeps peeping and then rocking the egg....she/he wants OUT!!!!. The first one that pipped has not done much more, but I see the egg moving so I know that it is okay. I also have seen 2 other eggs rock a bit, but no pip yet. I have set up my video camera so that when/if anyone hatches over night we might catch it (I don't know how long it will record - but we will try) so that DD (and me) can watch it. We are so excited.

I have never been to a Chicken show and was wondering if there will be chicken selling there? What about ducks? What other information and activities can I expect at Stevenson?

Stevenson is the place to go, apparently! I haven't ever been but I'm going this year. Yes, I would guess there will be chicks, chickens, ducks and ducklings available. As far as information--there are lots of people to answer questions or talk poultry with. There may be some seminars or something, too....

There is an schedule & more info here:

Hope I sleep better tonight; I need to call the guy I'm buying a bull from and see if he wants half the money now for help with his taxes, and he's one of those nice old fashioned farmers who likes to rest and reflect between words, which makes it a little hard to follow the conversation. After seeing what other people are paying this year, I feel like being very nice to him for agreeing to a price I can afford, even though I won't be able to breed to the new bull until next year (ouch). Then I get to do most of the week's grocery shopping (my daughter has Monday off) and pick up some additional wire for the big run. I'm hoping I get some dry weather during the day to get work done on the run; I just looked at the North Pacific satellite animation and I may be behind the right hills for that.

Of course a couple of weeks of cruising specialty chicken prices is also making me feel less stressed by buying this very nice young bull, at least on a per-pound basis.

Nice talking to y'all today; probably will be a little quieter when I settle down, although I do have over 40,000 posts on a Science Fiction bulletin board that I joined in 2003. Just fair warning, and all

Oh, yeah: anyone have any experience or reflections about sheep (Jacob) versus goat (any) wethers for vegetation control, particularly when it comes to difficulty of management, fencing, and general destructiveness? My childhood friend has a nice Jacob, and I'm considering that instead of getting a goat (I was thinking of a cashmere wether, because I want to play with fiber, and have connections for shearing, so that's not an issue). I know sheep will also eat grass, and that sounds like a really good thing, what with my husband not being able to use the mower.

CR: Here is the story: CL tried to fool all of us. She said she had unplugged her incubator and that some 25 more chicks had hatched. It scared us all, we thought she was off her rocker and didn't understand why she would unplug her 'bator full of eggs. I made the comment that I had thought her "cheese had slid off her cracker"....she was joking...she was trying to explain how she had 25 more chicks...saying that the eggs plugged in the bator and crawled in and got hatched. Well, that is her story and she is sticking to it....especially with Chickenman.

Applesauce straight!! Carcker or not!! darn it is beating te wall of the wee barn here...the rain & wind is awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you moved next door. Storm hit while I was grocery shopping. Came out with a cart full and ended up chasing my groceries through the parking lot! I'm glad I rounded my hens up and into the coop before the storm hit or I'd be peeling them off the trees and the fence.

one of the chicks pooped on my arm, and it still stinks even though I've scrubbed with lavender soap 3X! Ewww, stinky chicken poops! The broody EE gladly sat on the 6 Cochin eggs, and now that she has real eggs under her, she turned mean again. Hopefully we will have some chicks in 3 weeks. When do I candle and what do I look for?

Oh, yeah.

I noted in the BYC standards that all profanity is forbidden; this is hard for me, as I was raised to think the S word was a technical farming term. And then I went to Evergreen...

We substitute applesauce for the S word.

(And that is my story and I am sticking to it even if DH tortures me)

The egg fairies have been busy, or maybe it was the easter bunny.
