I only candle on day 18. But if I think the eggs could be bad than I will at around 12 or so.
X2.shipped eggs I candle before setting to be sure they are not cracked or scrambled, and mark any with bad air cells or air bubbles, etc.
At day 10 or 12 , I candle again and especially pay attention to the eggs I marked first.
Fresh unshipped eggs I set and do not touch til day 18 other than to quarter turn them in the turner...in other words, for 10 days they go North & South in the turner.
Give each egg a quarter twist so now they are going East to West.
Keeps the chicks looser in the egg.
ok, thanks for the info. Since my eggs were carefully hand delivered to me (thanks!) or picked up in person, I'll wait until day 18 to candle.
I will give them a little twist on day 10.

Guess I watched Star Wars a few too many times!!
Where abouts at Lake Tapps do you live? We are on the north end just inside the Auburn city limits. The family moved onto Driftwood Point in 1967. Mom still lives there.

Hi, so you have the Darth Vader brinsea pump too? My sister "Anniesmom" is really having fun with hers. I see her posting above this. Our mom does live on Drift Wood Point so "we" are not far from you. I am anxious for her eggs to hatch in her Darth-bator. Your duck babies are going to be so cute & I am sending you good hatching vibes. ) Patty

If your serious about the icelandics, your gonna have to get your foot in with the icelandics croud. And if they think that you will allow cross breeding with the icelandics, they will not give or sell you any eggs. Ive been talking with them since that thread started, and have followed the progress since day one. As far as I have heard, there isn't anyone in washington with Icelandics yet. I too would like to get my hands on some Icelandics, and think I would be perfectly happy with nothing but icelandics, as they vary so much in type, and color. Quite the interesting breed.
She is fine. Her hubby got home from Japan and they have been busy. They are trying to get the drainage thing taken care of in the backyard before he has to go back to work. Plus a million other "honey do" things! She said that she will try to jump on and say "hi" but it may be a few days!

I have been posting that i want to buy eggs and its frustrating because i read posts where they are giving away test eggs for free.
I can isolate them when breeding because i have a chicken tractor they can be kept in when i want pure or intentional cross bread birds. as it stands i have too many people in my area that have all the other icelandic critters that now that they have heard i am working on this they want to get some from me....
Also have a 4-h leader here wanting me to hatch some of these rare breeds for her grandaughter to show in our county fair. any one of these breeds would blow our common judges away as the only birds in this area are the common ones in feed stores or the mutts the mexicans raise.
I will keep asking them but it sounds like someone on that thread ticked off the original poster.
