who told you that? *curious* most of our arenas have utility sand in them and nobody has fallen over yet.

I first heard about it when we put a sand box in our back yard for the kiddos...I believe from a parenting magazine warning against the use of "regular" sand. Then last year when I was putting sand in run, I was getting bags of "regular" sand. The HD worker asked what it is for...I said chickens...and he said "well then you definitely want to use Play Sand. The other kind should not be used around small animals or kids". There's even a warning posted above the regular/construction sand bags with a caution about the dust from it causing respiratory problems. I wonder if the reason most larger scale projects use the construction sand is becuase the play sand only comes in 50# bags?

I wonder if play sand is coated, I have never bought sand from a store. I drive a dump truck so get it from the gravel pits. I know that the dust can be bad for you, but have never had a problem with it in all the years of using it in arenas

I had a great experience with tailfeathers' birds. He was extremely friendly and took the time to show me around his farm and talk about birds on a couple of occasions. I think he does a great job with his breeding program...silly that someone would think otherwise.

Not disagreeing but I would be interested to know the difference in sources for "play sand" vs regular sand. Aren't they both basically rocks that through one means or another have been ground up very tiny???

In other news, I was wondering whats the longest a young hen has gone without laying an egg. I have one bird that has to be getting near a year old and she laid one...ONE... egg last summer, august or september sometime, and has not done anything since. She is at the bottom of the pecking order, but seems to be in otherwise good health. My back yard is large for Seattle, but its fenced and just grass so Im pretty darn sure she hasnt been nesting outside of the coop. Very strange. Anyone have similar experience?
