I've got a huge lump in my throat and tears on my cheeks. That is far too young. It was so nice that she could be at home and that you were there with her. That must have been a great comfort to her.

It was a fair ending to an unfair situation. Her pain level is Zero - first time in I can't remember. I'm sad, but relieved at the same time.

You brought tears to my eyes, and stole my breath away. I am so sorry, but glad to hear she is no longer in pain. She was so young, and I do not know her story, but I am sorry for your loss. It sounds as if you did everything in your power to show her the love that she so deserved. Take care Dave, may you both have peace now.

Dave, there are a whole lot of words with insufficient meaning to cover the loss of ones's child, but none of them, nor all of them together, big enough, deep enough, hard or cold enough to match the experience: may you all have peace in your time of grief.

They (the broody hens) will want to raise their chicks, hopefully, and that will be months before they slowly leave their mother.
Then the broody hen may or may not go broody again this year.

Thank's everyone with the info on broody's. They start to hatch on the 29th of this month. I am planning on taking them from the broody's after one day then sell them a week later.

that is because th broody realizes how time sucking a kid or two is/are....you pull out a worm out of the ground - you tell yourself how wonderful thisis going to be....how should I eat it? Slow and slurpy or bit into small pieces? Then all of a sudden it is grabbed from your beak and your two teen age cockerels are playing tug-a-war with it and teasing their youngest pullet sister. My broody finally had enough at 6 weeks....she walked out of the juvenile pen, looked up at me (right in the eye)....walked over to the big girl pen, looked up at me again (and I swear)....she tells me... FOR GOD SAKE .... OPEN THE BLOODY THING....I HAVE HAD ENOUGH!!!!!
