One more question and I have to get some sleep. I appreciate your knowledge though!
Can vaccinated birds give it to ones that have not been? Are all hatchery birds vaccinated or do you have to ask upon purchase? Ok, so that was 2 Q's after all.

Just so much to learn!

Marek's is spread in the feather dander. Turkeys have a similar form which can actually vaccinated the chickens against the deadly form. It may be spread by wild birds, but is more likely to be acquired when you introduce an adult chicken into your flock.

So when I get adult birds and dont know if they have been vaccinated, what can I do before introducing them to the flock if I have chicks who HAVE been vaccinated by the hatchery?

So tell me what you all think about my idea for a shirt design for farmer's market/poultry swap

Does anyone locally do in ovo vaccinations, or is that mostly a matter of automated systems in commercial hatcheries? Just from the Wikipedia article the disease sounds bad, and in an area that still has huge commercial poultry operations, it would be irresponsible to become a disease reservoir; I have hard, sharp memories of the damage Exotic Newcastle Disease did to the ecomomy of Yelm Prairie and the lives of my schoolmates whose parents owned or worked at chicken farms.

And I feel like saying "Herpes! It's always Herpes!" a la Indiana Jones.

Wow. So much going on and I've been remiss on reading for several days:

First: T Hi, I am so sorry you're going thru this and that I'm not closer (and richer

) or I'd be there in a skinny minute. Most importantly, I am so glad you are taking yourselves out of that situation. I know almost nothing about your particular circumstances, but I do recognize that it's a very brave and difficult thing you're doing, and I admire you for it...

ChickieLady, you are so kind. Please let us know how we might be able to help THi from a distance...

Pettec : Sheesh! 1000 vaccines in an hour!?!?!? We only did that with the 'gun' during flu season, and that was premixed!! I'd really like to see that in action to not be skeptical... I like the idea about sterilely dividing the dry to minimize waste/cost. gees, louise that's a lot! Most my experience is with people: Yellow fever is only good for an hour, and it comes in doses of 10 for that very reason.

And that unprofessional wench at Del's? You know well, Chief,

I really have to rein myself in at times, dagummed conditioning!

I retired almost 5 years ago! Does it EVER wear off?!?!?!?!?!

Renart: I was JUST looking at this today trying to decide how many nests to put in my coop, and I did the search thing. Most popular official answer is: One per 3 to 4 hens. Most popular UNofficial answer is: One!

IF you use a modified live vaccine, then yes vaccinated birds will shed the virus and be a carrier for life, and will give the virus to other birds. You should only use a killed vaccine unless you have an outbreak and are trying to control losses, in which case you just use whatever you can get your hands on.
