yes ma'am I understand the vaccine part what bothers me is that I thought it was coming already mixed as in it would last longer than an hour?? does that make sense?? Like I just got goat vaccine, I don't have to mix it and I can draw my how ever many mils and give and put it back in the fridge till next time, with the dry of course, you have to mix it and use it and there goes what 978 vaccines down the drain?? Thank you CL for the instructions I appreciate it!!

I just don't want to waste the rest of the vaccine??? But, I guess I need to find a source for small quantities if that is possible, for now all I could find was the 1000 dose

I'm used to shooting dogs cats and occasional horses, little chicks will be interesting!!

You have to freeze it but you will need to draw it up into many syr. for the amount and than pop in Freezer.... Hope Im to late to let you know this...

ahh, I've been taught never to freeze vaccine?? but yea, hello!!! it makes sense to pull that many syringes up I guess I'll get on line and order a box of small syringes like I think you can get 0.5 ml cause it only take 0.2 per bird, and yea, I'm trying to figure it out before I make a move, thank you!!! !

So what size of coop are you thinking of? The reason I say this is my husband is great at building, if its not huge maybe he could let you know how much it would be.. Just a thought. We are trying or Im trying to build up some money so I can have one of my dogs eye sugery done. Its $1000.00 per eye and Id like to do just one eye..

Coopett! I love it, 'specially since I've got a friend bringing another one by so I can un-crowd the crew! I'm going to put them side by side and cut a connecting p-way so they can spread out...

They don't make the vaccine in smaller dose bottles only the 1000. And, you cannot freeze the vaccine, it will destroy it. It is very fragile and that is why it only lasts an hour.

Ok so I think Iv read everything, Want to say a Big

to all the new people on here.

Life has been crazy here, which is normal. Found out one of my dogs has diabetis and he's blind. So I now have to feed him twice a day every 12 hr and give him shots.. I love this little guy and would really like to have the eye sugery for him done so he can see again. But we will see.

I only have 15 more days left at work until summer break

Thank for the info,, as my name implies I was a small animal tech for 10 yrs not in the biz now, so getting the supplies would be tricky but, not difficult, I still have vet friends around. I certainly don't want to compromise the vaccine or the birds by trying to mix it like that, I'll have to try the last option!! Thanks!!

One more question and I have to get some sleep. I appreciate your knowledge though!
Can vaccinated birds give it to ones that have not been? Are all hatchery birds vaccinated or do you have to ask upon purchase? Ok, so that was 2 Q's after all.

Just so much to learn!

The thing is that birds become fairly resistant to the disease by around 5 months old, so if you simply don't mix your chicks and adults before then, you will probably be OK. There are exceptions- silkies being the most notable one- they are particularly susceptible. I have an article I wrote on the finer points of vaccination on my website if you're interested. www.swpoultry.com You do have to request vaccination from a hatchery. When I first got Marek's on my place, from a bird I bought from Louisiana, I lost about 15% of my flock- mostly silkies. Then I vaccinated all my chicks and then all the birds- youngest to oldest. Now I vaccinate chicks in batches as I said. My double tufted araucanas are quite susceptible to Marek's and I pay dearly when I get lazy and don't vaccinate a small batch. Of course, the much less valuable clean-faced araucanas are much less susceptible. Figures.

That was a very interesting article. I'm still not sure what I should do. I'd like to find a "vaccinating party", since I only have 6 chicks I've hatched myself and may only have a dozen more this year. I'll only be keeping a few of the birds I hatch to add to my tiny backyard flock. My flock will never have more than 10 adult birds. I've never given any vaccinations and the thought of trying to vaccinate myself makes me very nervous. I know of one vet in town who will see poultry. I'm wondering if there's a possibility he would vaccinate? I'm not as concerned about the cost of 1000 doses of the vaccine for 18 chicks as I am about the process of doing myself when I've never even witnessed it being done. I don't want to hurt one of the chicks, but I don't want to risk losing anyone either.

What is the possibility of my finding someone locally who would be willing to vaccinate for me for a fee?

I'm sorry you got bad info, it states right on the vaccine do not freeze, as a tech I have personally never seen a vaccine that you could freeze and still be viable, quite a interesting issue!!!! I appreciate all the input, and response and I think not only myself but, many are benefiting from the responses!
