There's apparently not a breeding racoon on my place this year: I can tell, because there hasn't been any road-kill on the road yet. The big old hollow pine tree the local female was nesting in got whacked in a NE blow. A lot of my trees are strong on the SW but fall when the gale blows out of the NE. I'm not looking forward to (allthough I am anticipating and planning against!) apple season- among other things I need some strong young'un to take down the part of the Grimes Golden tree that overhangs the Wyandotte coop, although that will have a welded-wire top by the end of the summer.

I let a friend of mine park her brother's wrecked camper-van at my place for way too long- especially since it was right under the big old Bartlett pear tree. A boar raccoon took up residence, killed cats, and I think was pushing coyote drugs from the kind of visitors he had: talk about an attractive nuisance! Luckily the van was hauled away in the daytime, and a junkyard on the other end of town got a bonus delinquent wildlife species.

...............we have not had any roadkill out here on our road for at least a year....all the way to town!
Did see a big boar coon on a guy's lawn down the road, in broad daylight, digging in his lawn..eating grubs maybe ?
he only hid when we slowed the car to look at him.
Had another younger one walk within 15 feet of DH while he was post hole digging..the young coon stood up on hind legs & waved at DH, then DH hissed at him & the coon ran away.
We have also caught many on the wildlife cam...and have caught 3 in the trap so far.
Went to town 3 days ago in the morning about 8 AM, and a big coon ran across the road from the river ...hid in a bush by the road, peeking out as if could not see him.
Since the bob cat is gone again, we have alot of coons coming around.
The cat will return, as always, within 21-30 days on it's rounds..and next time & am going to catch him for sure...got a plan!

We get the big stinky's here. black and white striped, nasty little buggers. Makes your eyes burn so bad. Won't have them in North Idaho where I am moving to, so that will be nice.

Well, no ment ruck, and the contractor & crew of one cute blonde wife, went home to eat an early lunch.
The ment company called & said truck will arrive at 11:30 instead..so we dilly dally until then.........

I never had any in North Idaho where I lived, hordes in California though.
be glad we do not have the kind that can climb trees like those in Mexico!!!!!!!!!!!

We did have very brazen cougars in Idaho, and I am sure some wolverines or some such critter.
We had coyotes that would snatch a chicken right off your front porch in broad daylight and try to chew through heavy hex (1/2") wire & fence wire to get puppies & chickens.
Puppy pen was outside too, along with turkeys & rabbits in hutches.
Cougars enjoyed prowling right around the house, and you have to be careful when going out to start the car early in the morning when ya go to work...especially in winter.

Gotta go, it is get ready time again.

Much rather have skunks than the stupid imported possums that replaced them in the local ecosystem. And given that a friend of mine who moved to North Idaho to raise goats took to wearing a 45 on her hip after going into the goat barn for morning milking and finding a grizzly bear eating the goat feed, I think I'd stick with skunks.

Naw, inspectors coming, contractor's here, can't go skinning a coon at the moment...

You know, they are nasty little critters but so dang cute!! I guess that's why they've been able to become part of the urban culture; Some people just love to see them and feed them.

It depepends on the materials used. We have had ours for 9 years and it looks the same as the day it was put on. I'm not sure what brand we have, but it is a triclad with all 3 metals being silver-toned. I love it - guaranteed to last 75 years and ZERO maintenance! I was told it may oxidize a bit, but I have seen no sign of that at all. Another neighbor also had a silver metal roof on, but his was clad over copper (I assume it must have been a lot more costly than ours with that metal!) The silver coating on his started to wear off about 3 years ago, and now it is full of long splotches of various color - bright copper where the copper was recently exposed, dark brown where the copper has started to oxidize, hints of green patina and strips of silver. I think it looks kind of cool, but he hates it and is very upset about it. Our roof was rated for 75 mph winds, but we get higher than that here at times, one area of our house acts as a wind-tunnel during storms and a section of roof peeled off while the house was underconstruction. We had the entire edge screwed down, and it is now rated somewhere in the 100's for wind. We are exposed on a ridge overlooking the Middlefork Valley, and we have big overhangs where the roof is exposed from the underside, so it can really get a lot of wind on it. The roof is very noisy in high winds and hail, but I love it. In real strong storms, I sometimes have to go to the basement and sleep as it can get too noisy.

I, too, enjoy the patina look of copper.

A lady in our neighborhood raises orphaned raccoons. She then releases some of them here and they become pests. She released 72 one year! They have learned that 2 big dogs live on our place and stopped coming around. I'm afraid now that there are chickens here they might become a problem again. Hopefully they are not brazen enough to come out during the day.

Does anyone know if they can climb chain link?

Yes! Coons can climb chain link! Run a line of hotwire, and they wont try again though! They are smart little boogers!
