Yes they can! Had them here until I got my second dog and have seen them climb it many times. They also climb some fence wire that I bought which was called "No Climb". I think they mean kids can't climb it because their feet won't fit it it, but for raccoons it is a ladder. Before I got my big nasty dog, they used climb up the fence and hang out on the trellis above the gate teasing my other big but not so nasty dog. We had 3 fat ones (one with no tail) that would hang out here. The ones we had in Woodinville were evil and killed my cats by coming in through the cat door and dragging my cats out to the deck. DH likes to turn them into speed bumps when he rides is motorcycle (inculding the bike you got CL!). He found lots of temporary speed bumps on Avondale Road. They seem to avoid the roads up here.

So what would be a good height for the wire? I have the stuff to run a double set of lines at 2 different heights. Any advice from the experts?

Im guessing here, but seeing as they will stand up and reach to climb, then maby aprox. 3' up the fence, and maby one at the top?

Does anyone have a picture of a good feeder for 10 ducks/chickens that can be left outside and is rainproof and rat proof?
My ducks need a new Cafe.

Finally no rain! It is a little breezy but I don't mind that at all. I have the roof on, felt down and the first row of shingles in place. Should have the roof finished in a few hrs, then on to the sheeting. I hope to have this Tri-Plex done by the weekend. I have a different project lined up -- a "rare" one

I'll post photos of my progress on my next break.

You know, they are nasty little critters but so dang cute!! I guess that's why they've been able to become part of the urban culture; Some people just love to see them and feed them.

A lady in our neighborhood raises orphaned raccoons. She then releases some of them here and they become pests. She released 72 one year! They have learned that 2 big dogs live on our place and stopped coming around. I'm afraid now that there are chickens here they might become a problem again. Hopefully they are not brazen enough to come out during the day.

Does anyone know if they can climb chain link?

This is only slightly less stupid and irresponsible than raising orphaned starlings, although starlings at least do not carry rabies and vibrio.

Yeah, raccoons can climb chain link; I hear that if you put a really hot wire at the top you can slow them down, though.

Raising them to release them into a National forest would be one thing; but into the backyards of numerous people with garbage cans to lure them and big dogs to threaten them... irritating. It's not fair to the animal or the people. Like releasing deer into field of prepared hunters.

i got my grubs...

but i think there's enough to start my bins so I'll just keep going as planed

Are you going to raise mealworms? Is that what your grubs are?

no i'm gonna raise Black Soldier Fly grubs...
they can eat any kitchen waste as well as any dung waste... (if they eat chicken dung then you can not feed them back to chickens but can feed them to reptiles and fish)

I will eventually have 3 bins... 1 grub kitchen waste, 1 grub dung waste and 1 worm bin that will love the grub castings.
kitchen waste grubs will be fed to the chickens when they pupate, dung waste will be allowed to pupate and turn to adults for new grubs and i'll give some pupates to neighbor for his reptiles.

Scott of Patriot Farm and Bisons is butchering pigs now... anybody want in you should email Scott! or me and I'll give you the email/phone.
Average Cost:
The Animal = $300.00
Butcher, Cut, Wrap, Cure =$160.00
Total cost: $460.00 to $500 for a whole hog.

cost depends on weight and cure/smoke/cut fees
