Anyone know anything about the beginnings of founder in a fat pony? Can you excersize say like walk trot if said pony isnt lame... Im hoping we caught this on time, as Dude isnt lame, but sure shows the first signs of the onset of founder... Stupid owner turned him out on her back 40 acres, the grass is tall and WAY overgrown and WAY to hot for most horses to eat without issues...

dry lot grass hay, walk trot should be fine. need to make sure blood flow is maintained in those feet. I'm no expert but that is the direction I would go.

Ok good, thats the advice I gave the owner, and my sister... Why this lady put an already fat Quarter horse pony out on fast growing spring grass, I just can't understand...

Poor Dude was already pleasently plump, now he looks like a extra large tootsie roll with the thick stud like neck... Luckily he isnt showing any signs of soarness.

Is it better or worse now that the female coyote got hit on the road and that she had been nursing pups after all?

We shall see, I expect.

Better -- cuz she cannot litter again this year, or next

On the other hand, the pups she had would be close to weaning, and may not hunt by the rules when they get hungry.

The beginnings of founder--that's called laminitis. Inflammation of the laminae in the horse's hooves.

What symptoms are you seeing?

You should get it on some Bute ASAP--any anti-inflammatory will help. Cold water hosing on the front feet (most likely the ones to founder).

Dry lot, with soft footing--no more grass...NO grain. Grass hay, only. Lots of water. I would NOT force exercise or trot that pony at all. You don't want the coffin bone to rotate/separate from the hoof wall. Then it's foundered....
