You use zip ties for bands? I never thought of that. I tried feather sexing and I banded the babies to see how I faired in my "guessing". The bands were small and the chicks grew fast. the next band size up was almost too big for some of the babies and some of them fell off. I never thought of using zip ties. This is a geat idea.

Yes you can buy big canisters with different lengths and colors at Wal-Mart or Home Depot. I put them on a little big and then you have to just watch them--when they get a little snug, cut it off and put on the next size up. It's cheaper than bandettes and bands and when they reach adulthood, they get their permanent bands.

Thank you so very much. I am constantly learning and gleening great information.

How do you separate? color = sex or color = age (when hatched) or breed? Does this make sense? Do you just mark ones that you are wanting to keep an eye on as they may be really great "type"?

I was just at Wal*Mart yesterday (hate that place) - next trip I will have to get some zippies.

Zipties are one of the things which are almost always much cheaper at Harbor Freight, if you've got one near you.

Nope, no Harbor Freight here. Just Wal*Mart and Home Depot. Big R coming this fall. They are here more so for the Canadians, we have a huge inflow of Canadians - back and forth. At the Vet clinic we even have Canadian clients. Just had two that came in to have their dogs spayed. I can't imagine how it is cheaper to come down here (gas) and then spend the night and have the dogs spayed...but they insist it is. Very nice folks.

I do actually have a serious question about "short-man" syndrome in Roosters. Tyson, my bantam Cochin - who will be replaced with one of the orpington cockerels that I hatched out....anyway.....Tyson attacks many of the hens. He has his favorite 1 or 2....but bullies the rest. Even Matilda...who had been a favorite. He does not like the BCM girls at all. I think he can not get the job done as he is too small and he is taking out his frustration on them. Is this possible? I am putting together a 3rd pen for him and my few bantam hens I have and he will be moved to it. I do hope this mellows him out....or it is down the road for him. He is just getting meaner and meaner all the time. I have a small rake in the chicken yard so that I can sweep the sand to clean it....I used it on him the other day...he is now swinging wide of me whenever I come in. They are NOT over crowded. The run is very big, nice clean coop. What is his problem?

I'll pay a little more at Walgreen's to avoid having to go to Walmart!
You should have seen the looks on the faces of the young, cute, skinny girls at Del's when I wore my woven straw gardening hat in there!(the one I have to wear in the sun now cause I have cancer brewing on my ears from too many years of ball caps and no sun block) I forgot that I was embarrassed cause the reaction I got out of them was so funny. They were visibly mortified for me because of the hat! It was hilarious!
People need to learn to lighten up about fashion! The person inside the clothes(as long as they ARE inside their clothes) is more important than what is on the outside!
