Blu-kote is antiseptic and antifungal and hides blood because it's royal purple! I swear by it since my eagle attack.

Ah, blu-kote, thank you. I'm going to have to find some tomorrow. I'm guessing I'll have to run out to Del's in Puyallup. I should get around to putting together a chicken first aid kit anyway. What do you guys think is important to have for a first aid kit?

In the meantime - little Roo seems fine on his own, but surprisingly Juju is having a very hard time with his absence from the family brooder. She has been chirping like she's in distress ever since I got home 30 minutes ago. I had no idea they had bonded? When I heard the crying and went in to check on all of them, she was looking right at me to let me know there was a problem I should be fixing. I'm hoping they all go to sleep eventually.
Thanks again Hallerlake.

Today was the Brabanters third day outside. We put them in the coop the Friday evening and let them out in the morning. Saturday evening, I had to put them in the coop. Last night, I had to catch them, put them in the coop, and keep them there. Tonight, two of them went into the coop by themselves. The other three I had to catch, but once inside they didn't try to come back out. Progress is being made.

I think there is a sticky under diseases on first aid kits.

I am also from North Whidbey, I have 20 currenttly, 14 in the coop (7-8 weeks old) and 6 in the brooder (4 weeks old) and 25 eggs in the incubator! I originally planned on 12 or so, and built my coop larger than I needed (8x10) and a 24x24 run. Now I am thinking I will be adding another coop in the near future. WIth our wetaher being pretty mild year around they can be outside the coop pretty much every day. With 30 chicks I would think you would need a pretty big coop! I would wager a 120-140 sq ft would be about the minimum and bigger if you have the room. My plans are to build a 2nd coop the same size right next to the one I just finished.....

Are you going to set them ?
If so, I recommend you collect eggs for 6 or 7 days, then set them.
If they are dirty, you can gently scrub dirt/poop off with a dry scothc brite scubby.
Setting eggs every 6 or 7 days gives you time in between batches.
I have 3 brooders, new babies are to the right, the center is middle babies and the left is older babies with a door so they can go outside.
One they are a month or more old (started birds) they are sold, or go to the coops with the big birds.
Then each batch is moved to the left.
I have 2 hatching incubators and one big cabinet incubator.
I can set eggs every 7 days, and when lockdown comes on a set, it is removed from the big cabinet, candled, and good eggs go into lockdown in one of the 2 lockdown incubators.
So consider how you are going to work this all out.
Even with 1 incubator, 6 or 7 days works.
But you cannot keep opening your incubator to set eggs if any prior sets are in lockdown.
It would be very confusing after a while (it is confusing) that is why I have 2 just for lockdowns.

You do have quite the operation going CL! But this brings me to a question I've had for a while, that you've just brought up. When is a chicken not a chick anymore, but a "started" bird? Is it when they're a month old or more? And then, they're pullets or cockerels until they either lay eggs or... start doing rooster stuff?

A started bird is one that can be sexed, so no longer a straight run chick, and one that is off lights and out of the brooder. Usually by 4-6 wks birds fall into this category.

Also, if they are under a red heat lamp, the red light helps disguise the blood which should help them to not peck on him.

Yeah, I thought of the conversation we had when I came to your place. Her crop was emptying at first, but maybe it was slow, I don't know. Then when I realized it was a problem it got slower and slower until it all but stopped emptying. I felt so bad that we(me & vet) didn't realize this was a possible problem until it was too late, she died this morning as I took her into the vet again. I don't even know if there was anything we could have done about it, but I would have done something earlier, even put her down so she didn't just waste away. So now I have the two I got from you and one of my original 4. 2 girls and one boy. Everybody else better stay healthy or I am going to throw in the towel.

Next year I think I am going to hatch some eggs. Maybe some of my own and maybe get some others from my fellow BYC'ers, like maybe some Java's?

Sorry you lost her.

I don't know what you could have done any differently.

I still so love your avatar. I want a baby Hoss. I was thinking it would be fun to name my orpington babies after Gunsmoke characters (Hoss- like you did) but could not think of any girl names from the show.

I have some going to hatch this weekend. I am sure there will be a couple roosters in there...as usual lol.

Can you put me down for a blue roo and a splash girl if you have any to spare????? If not this hatch, than another down the road is fine too. My Hoss baby boy is black.

I wasn't sure at first. But pretty sure now. I already have a black boy my girls are in love with, so if anyone wants a black Hoss baby boy, I have one available! Hatched under my broody from RedReiner's eggs. He's almost 4 wks old I think and already HUGE.

Also put in a new batch of Orp eggs & Crele OEGB's. Waiting on another delivery of lavender cochin eggs to jumpstart that project a bit. Can't wait for my cochin young'uns to get to laying age already!!!

Darn kids think they're immortal.

She scared me half to death! I think it will be a few days before she is allowed to walk across the easment... Think I will cary her for a while. Ive been working with her on stopping and looking both ways, but sometimes, she just looses her head and takes off. But alas, she is 2 1/2 and is apt to do things like that. I really wish I could find a harness and extended leash for her locally. I wouldnt care if I got goofy looks, it would be for her own protection, and my sanity...
