So, I was in the garage the other night and I found the little giant incubator that my BF had gotten for free, it had a 1inch hole in the side, I never really looked at it or plugged it in cause, it looked like a piece of junk!!! Well, I decided to open it up and see what it had and if it worked. It has the auto turner in it! So i took it inside the house, scrubbed it with bleach, put the auto turner back in it plugged the hole with a piece of paper towel and turned it on. It already had a little thermometer in it. I waited an hour and looked at the temp and the turned and I'll be hell if it wasn't reading right at 99.5!!!! I could tell the auto turner had moved too, so I left it on for over three hours and it maintained temp and the turner kept turning!! I felt stupid!! Here I spent a good deal of money for a new Brinsea cause I didn't know enough about incubators, to check this other one out, I thought it would be a pile and I would have to get a new one anyway!! So my BF went and got spray foam and we are going to get some cardboard and cut it out to make a form to shoot spray foam in the hole to seal it and see what happens!!! yikes I feel about an inch tall, he kept telling me, you need to try this one!!! Live and learn, but oh boy! I have another bator!!!!

Yes and what is so great is that she was free. The lady bought her for bug control, but this year she found all the flowers the lady had planted and started eating them. She didn't like that and rather than pen the chicken, she put an ad on craigslist. LUCKY ME!!!

here's another pic, cause I just can't stop myself. This is cute, cause she wasn't sure about this meatie chick. She pecked at it once and then it tried to peck back at her. She left it alone after that and went back to foraging.

Gotta love that price too!! Eggs are in the future. When I get back home, I will be picking up a barred rock roo-free. Plus a few other big layers if the guy still has any left.

...I can just see the girls telling their parents and the parents reporting you to the HOA and then you will get in big trouble!
Course, they probably have nothing written in the HOA by-laws about a boy and a paintball gun......

. I feel so torn - let them free-range or not? They have such a good time scratching around the yard, and I don't think they are in much danger when my dogs are out in their run. I think I'm going to fence off the orcahrd from the rest of the backyard as that is where all the predators enter from. The chickens will get the acre closest to the house, and my dogs can patrol the back acre.

I looked up Javas and Buckeyes after you left here, they both sound like wonderful birds! If I decide not to let them free-range, then I shouldn't get any more, but if they hang out where they have been since the attack (under my office window!), then they are fine. Are they near POL? let me talk to Don, if they don't need heat and we divide the yard, then sure! (I don't know how he will feel about pounding in fence posts after Sunday's disaster!)

and poor Shasta, I totally knicked her twice while removing some matts. She did not even flinch! I'm taking her to a groomer next week as I can't finish the job. I now know why poodles often have lion cuts! We brush her often, but the brush was not making it all the way through so her long hair looked nice but her undercoat is totally matted against her skin on both hips where she lies down on them. I thought I should remove the matts before I bring her to the groomer so they won't see how neglectful I have been, but now she looks worse with the 2 big knicks! Then I tried using scissors, her haircut is awful! I did not cut her skin anymore, but the haircut reminds me of an episode of Leave It to Beaver!

I'm so sorry about your hens!!!

that sounds like something my son would do too!!! I love lion cuts on poodles!!! Used to have to help do them as a tech sometimes for medical reasons!! it's easier on the dog too! Good luck with all of this!!

2 marinated chuck steaks (grass fed) in the broiler - how long do I cook-em for? I eat a lot of fish and don't really know how to cook red meat otehr than burgers and roasts.

so have a question for you all. If I put a barred rock roo on my new BO hen, what will the resulting offspring most likely resemble. Anybody ever done this?

Wow - Maybe it was a bear that took my chicken! A friend who lives a mile up the hill from me just stopped by to pick up eggs. She said there are currently 2 wildlife officers with 4 bear-dogs out by my house! Two dogs in the 10 acre wood on one side and 2 in the 5 acres on the other, right in the middle is my backyard (we have a bow-tie shaped property that is pinched by the greenbelts). I have not been paying attention to the HOA announcements, but she went to a meeting the other week in her neighborhood and said there have been a lot of complaints of a nuisance bear in their neighborhood and ours. I know a bear got into the neighbor's trash can last week. (We aren't allowed to put cans out until after 7am). Tomorrow is trash day. I usually run and put the can out when I hear the truck, not because of the bears, but because of my memory!
