I have had great kids work for me in the past.
You would be surprised how motivated they can be when it all comes down to something that intrigues them, captures their minds & hearts.
We all have (hoefully) experienced that passion before, and hopefully not experienced the dread that can completely over take a person stuck in a dead end boring job that they hate so much it is hard to get out of bed...such as yet another dreary boring day in HS.

My got my first "real job" when I was 14 years old. I worked as a waitress, at a small diner in Suquamish, made $4.75 an hour. I loved it, and worked there until I was 16. During my freshman year of HS, I started vocational training at a tech school. Took Cullinary arts for 8 months. Outside of school, I was in training as an aprentice, for farm management. Spent five years working under a couple farm managers, mainly focussing on horse farms. Ive been doing this ever sence then. I gave myself two options in career choices, and chose the one that fits me best...

I guess I'm just tired of going into a store to spend my hard earned $ and getting treated as if I am inconveniencing someone for coming in. We have a few places like that around here and it is irritating. I have had this experience with teens and adults alike. So I'm not just down on teens or young people.
I'm just saying if your going to hold a job, be thankful you have a paycheck, do your best, and check your 'TOOD" at the door on the way in! Customer service should be high priority.
Jim Lucas shouldn't be the only reason I go to Del's. They should all be as nice as Jim. Know what I mean?

I think you should start a blog...it has been a lot fun. I started it so my friends and family could keep up with what we were doing out in the country...plus my peeps are diva's and love it when I blog about them.

Why on this Earth are you giving any teachers any gifts ??????????????????
It is their JOB to teach.
They get a PAYCHECK & great benefits and vacations and retirement.
No one else gets a """GIFT""" for doing their job.
Think about it, if you actually gave a gift to everyone who was just DOING THEIR JOB!!!
The meter reader, the garbage man (he needs a gift bad!!

)
the poor soul running the 7-eleven
The gardeners, the power line guys...
What about the poor guy scrubbing the toilets ?!?!
The janitors..scraping the kids chewing gum off the floors...

The kitchen staff sweating in the HOT kitchen.
Think about that.
I would not give a second thought to giving a teacher a ""gift""" geeeze.........

LOL, I agree. I guess if its the kids idea and they come up with something on their own because they really like their teacher I would help them. I would encourage that kindness in my kid. But I never mentioned it if my kid didn't. SOME teachers do go above and beyond. We should let the good ones know we appreciate them but we could go broke giving gifts to all the folks at school who bust their butts for the kids.

When we gifted it was usually Lily's idea. I was always appreciative of teachers who would go the extra mile for students especially because my kid was in speech therapy since she had been 2 years old and had delayed learning because of hearing/speech issues. When she could not be understood by ANYONE, not her peers, her family, but only by her day-care Mom and was speaking in full sentences but not being understood it was very frustrating for all of us. She was in special programs from the time she was 3, (getting picked up by a schoolbus from daycare) until she was in 2nd grade. She had some delayed learning and as hard as she tried would always be a little behind most of the other kids in class and it was only with some additional attention from a few teachers (and us) that she was able to catch up. When she nearly FAILED some of her classes in 4th grade because of a terrible teacher who I tried to work with and was isolated from the other kids to the point where she said her only friend was "Tornado", a swirling group of leaves on the playground, I pulled her from that school and put her in St. Pats where her grades immediately began to improve.
When she learned in 6th grade that the only way she could serve on student council was to have a 3.5 or higher, she buckled down and got 4.0 from then on, because she figured it was time she began to have a say in how her environment was run.

So I've had my share of really rotten teachers and some pretty excellent ones who could recognize potential in a little girl who was almost left behind. If that little girl wants to reward those people she has a special affinity for, then I'm all for it, the same way I will give extra to the guy who prunes my trees, the gal who cuts my hair, the person who delivers my mail etc.

I don't have any great suggestions. Gift certificates? Home canned goods? They could probably use a drink by the end of the school year, but I guess alcohol wouldn't be appropriate.

We didn't gift our teachers every year except for a few that Lily thought were really special. I remember one year at the end of 6th grade (I think) when she insisted on giving her teachers a pineapple and hand made a card for each of them that said "Golden fruit for a golden teacher". It was all her idea and it still makes me smile to think of it.

I wouldn't give a gift to every teacher, but there are some that go above and beyond the call of duty, and making them feel appreciated is a good thing. The garbage man and the meter reader do not lie awake at night worrying about some kid who is his own worst enemy. Some teachers do.

Pretty much my feelings about anybody that is on strike! If the job is so bad and or you are so under paid and unhappy well don't let the door hitcha where the good lord splitcha !!! There are plenty of us out here who would like to have some of those jobs !!!!!!

If the pay is too poor, the best people will move on to other jobs (they owe it to their families), and the schools will be staffed with the people who aren't good enough to go elsewhere. Do you really want your kids taught by the people who aren't bright enough to make it in other fields?

Wow! I just got a call from one of the Fish and Wildlife officers that was here on Thursday - they were tracking 4!!!! Bears through my property! They caught 2, including a really big male, and still are going to be trapping 2 more. They are training the bears to be afraid of people and to stay away from garbage cans, and then they will be releasing them RIGHT BACK HERE! He said they are very territorial and will keep other bears out of the area and if it works, should train their offspring to avoid humans and garbage. They had a camera crew with them because they wanted to shoot film of the program, and they came up here because we have such a heavy concentration of bears, they knew they could get some! He said after seeing just how many houses are out here, they have made this area a priority to get the bears trapped and trained.

He said it could have been a bear but more likely a bobcat that took my chicken; he said they coyotes can't climb chainlink. He suggested that I attach a line of chicken wire to the top of my fence angled away from my yard to make it more difficult for the bobcat, which he said can easily just hop over a 6' fence. Removing the fruit trees also would help keep the bears out of my yard.
