I passed!

The doctor just called me and told me the first test (after the drink) I was at 193!

Which is borderline but the next two were good!

He said no refined sugars (candy bars, pop, etc)--which I don't really drink anyway...and he said babies born to moms with blood sugar issues tend to be on the "large side." He said 9-10lbs.

That c-section is starting to sound better & better.

(I have to have one anyway because of other issues--but this news makes me feel a little bit better!)

DH was able to use a fuse from a string of Christmas lights. The fuse was actually located in the plug head itself, not in the incubator. Odd, I know...once we got the new fuse in, the fans turned on right away...DH is still amazed at how everything in there works (or doesn't) and the thought process of some of the construction elements.

Either way, it's on--the lights are working, the fans are running. I will let it run a few days and keep the ones due to hatch in my trusty little Hovabators for now...

Do you need my Brinsea? Mine is almost empty.

ETA: Sorry you are feeling so poorly. I hate those tests. and I hate when they cannot find veins. So sorry for your whole day.

Thanks for the offer but I think I'll be okay.

I just sent DH to town to search for a new fuse. He's going to try the auto parts store first and Wally World as a last resort. I have two Styrofoam hovabators with fans that are running right along...and I went out & checked--FOUR broodies in the coop as of right now. I might also have a broody Muscovy female--or I'm hoping for one because I had someone email me and offer me some super-duper rare ducks (and hatching them under a scovy would be my best shot I think....)that said, now i need to thin out my Muscovies since I finally broke the news to DH last night that I have another breed of goose.

I take it that DH does not visit the bird area often. LOL....

I know the Brinsea is probably way too small for your production...but just in case of emergency. Right now it is full of approximately 14 fluff balls. Waiting for the last of them to dry out and wait for the cover of darkness to introduce them to their new momma. Wonder what Hannah is going to think when she wakes up with 14 babies under her. I looked under her today - I thought she had 1 egg...she actually has 3. Wonder if she can do multiplication.

X2. That's an interesting plan and I hope it works for the bears AND for your neighborhood! I've been following stories about black bears through the North American Bear Center in Ely, MN on Facebook. I've been fascinated by what I've learned there. There was a documentary about Lynn Rogers on Animal Planet some time ago called "Bearwalker of the North Woods". The program is rerun from time to time. Dr. Rogers studies these bears close up with tracking collars and webcams on their dens. He has spent decades earning their trust while still keeping his distance. It amazes me how he approaches the bears he knows to replace batteries in their collars just by whispering, "It's me bear", offering them nuts and favored treats so they allow him to touch them without any sedation. They share beautiful, and sometimes very sad stories about the individual bears and their offspring on their site, lots of photos and videos.

I wonder what the process is to train bears to be afraid of people? It is certainly best if all keep their distance from one another.

Sometimes, officers will do what's called a "hard release" to make the bear relearn its fear of humans. Officers set off noisy firecrackers and scream and yell so that the animal associates the scary experience with people and will avoid them.

They will sometimes use rubber bullets too. Dogs barking...the whole 9-yards.
