I've heard that too. Here, I think. They also take out everything else less than 6"DBH.

I hate pigs. I can't eat pork at all anymore, so I'm purely agin' 'em.

(Oh, bacon, sweet, sweet bacon, food of my daily desire, lost forever).

Too bad you couldn't have them eat your berries and then sell them as soon as they get big and stinky! Maybe they are stinky from the get go.

Oh, the little tiny ones are pretty sweet, as farm babies go; the thing is that they are smarter and more tricksterish than goats. And stronger, by leaps and bounds.

I'm happy with my coming sheep. Tomoorow! I get my sheep tomorrow! And it's first meal will be the blooming tall fescue upwind of my clothesline.

So now the wind is howling and my birch tree that I planted three years ago that was finally going to be tall enough this summer to shade my cochins & Orloffs--broke. DH was showing me his progress on my newest coop and we heard, it crack.

It broke off about 2' from the ground and tipped over. Just gone.

question, I know I saw some one post something some time ago about chicks losing or picking their feathers, I have three of them doing that, one black split, one BO and one BLRW?? It's not mites or lice, checked them really well for that, no one else is doing it, they have been on pine wood chips not straw at all and the rest of the bunch have plenty of feathering and not having problems?? So my thoughts were stress, I'm feeding chick starter so they are at least at 18% protein, which I also read could be the problem, or maybe they are being picked on?? Anyone with ideas??

The problem, of course, is that nothing else works: no other animal eats the darn stuff*, and cutting back and digging the burls is a yearly life-time job, because anywhere blackberries have grown for more than a year or two is full of viable seeds (they have this in common with Scotch Broom, BTW). Burning in February and digging the burls only has to be done about every three years, and is best for fruit production but is highly illegal; I've yet to find a non-organic control that works with less effort than burning, or half as well. Goats are da bomb for blackberry control, wethers are great pets, but there's two problems: they'll eat anything if you don't protect it by fences so tight you can't see in, they can climb like cats (and the pygmies are worst for that, followed by Cashmeres). Oh, and they have really unfortunate senses of humor. Wethers are great pets, but there's three problems...

* well, Jacob sheep, when there's no green grass. Which is not my current condition. I will have photos of my new lamb and the sheep tractor by this time tomorrow.

didn't know that about them eating black berry's, my goats like to rub fences, they occasionally put their front legs on it to get my attention, or what is very interesting, is if you don't have your hot wire low enough, they will actually time the hot wire, and run under it!! The first time we put up hot wire, it wasn't low enough and so we put them out in the field and the next thing you know they were back up top?? I was scratching my head, how in blazes did they get through........then I watched them!! LOL we got it down now!! and yes they do have a sense of humor, and it's usually on me!!! lol!! But, they were such cute babies!!! lol!

Over here in blackberry land, there's people who make a living renting out flocks of goats to clear brush- mostly blackberries- out of stormwater ponds.
