The problem, of course, is that nothing else works: no other animal eats the darn stuff*, and cutting back and digging the burls is a yearly life-time job, because anywhere blackberries have grown for more than a year or two is full of viable seeds (they have this in common with Scotch Broom, BTW). Burning in February and digging the burls only has to be done about every three years, and is best for fruit production but is highly illegal; I've yet to find a non-organic control that works with less effort than burning, or half as well. Goats are da bomb for blackberry control, wethers are great pets, but there's two problems: they'll eat anything if you don't protect it by fences so tight you can't see in, they can climb like cats (and the pygmies are worst for that, followed by Cashmeres). Oh, and they have really unfortunate senses of humor. Wethers are great pets, but there's three problems...

* well, Jacob sheep, when there's no green grass. Which is not my current condition. I will have photos of my new lamb and the sheep tractor by this time tomorrow.

I was told that pigs do the best job on blackberries. They eat all of it even the roots after they snout them out. Don't know though, never had one.

Pigs are GREAT on Blackberries...

So speaking of goats, anyone know if goats will eat rhodies? I know that rhodies are bad for goats, I just wonder if the goat knows they are bad & will stay away from them naturally? Just a question my husband asked me & I didn't know.

Shannon

I read in an earlier post some one had some goats, ( sorry I can't remember who) who said that had a whopping vet bill cause their goats got into Rhodies! Goats are smart but, maybe not that smart!!

It was me. Our pygmy doe was very very sick and nearly died. She spent 48 hours at the vet on IV's to save her. Several hundred $$. While she was there, we pulled up the rhodies and got rid of them.

Our girls do the same thing so we have chairs around them now. It looks like they are in jail when they look through them. So darn cute. My son said on Sat you know the girls dont stay in the box when I came upstairs they were running around the house.

I think most people who are really into sheep are first for meat than fiber than milk. Was the cheese from Black Sheep Creamery? The owners let a bunch of us have a 2 day cheese making class down there a few years back. I learned so much from that it was great..

Oh they eat them ok, and they get very very sick , than the next time they get to your yard they head straight to the same plant and do the same thing. Than when you come home you see your sweet husband and son have take the rhodies all out of your yard. Why honey did you do that, well I dont want to smell you like that and hate to see you cry because your goat might not make it. Yep he took out one that I had gotten from my great uncle who has passed. I was so mad but you know I couldnt say anything because he's just a great husband.

ASK my BF about that ! That is pretty much been my mantra since I moved back here!! he he he!! I finally had to succumb to telling him tho, so when I popped the "we're getting another goat" on him he said "I'm surprised you told me first" LOL! I told him I wouldn't do that anymore, so I'm not! So now I have to take the consequences of telling him now even if he say's no! Guess it's better to start a marriage off on the right foot! Yes I said that, you guys are the first to know, and no, I don't know when, he is picking the date! I told him I wanted to go to the Hitching Post in ID, and keep it on the down low!! so.....shhhhhhhhhh no telln!! LOL!

Oh very cool, I hope I can save that much. I have been doing ok with it, and must say my son is happy to have food in here more now than before. We should start a Coupon thing on this site and see what every one is doing. Does that sound good, maybe do a coupon swap or something. I have so many for baby things. I can get lots of the mail coupon one's have a 6 inch stack from last weeks, dont know about this week.
Hope to hear from you soon.

I "extreme coupon" as much as I am able to in such a small town. I can't double coupon or anything like that. But I can get some super good deals at Safeway. There are some really good web sites.
My favorites:
http://queenbeecoupons.com/
http://thekrazycouponlady.com/

and, but this is $5 a month per store...I have learned a lot and I am going to quit doing soon: http://www.thegrocerygame.com/

If anyone is interested we could do a coupon train going. Get a mailing list, put coupons you will not use in and take coupons you can use out, mail it to the next person on the list. I have done this before and it is great. Unfortunately I can not get a Red Plum flyer. Mine are never as good as others. But would love to be part of it.

cool!! I'm in!!

yea, that would be awesome! Now, I have found out, here in Sunnyside, the dollar tree sells the seattle times advanced addition on sat am!! So I have been going down early in the morning and getting 4 - 5 papers with the coupons, I have a big binder and the first time my boyfriend went with me and he saw how much I saved he freaked out!! Now he's all about the coupons!! lol! So I take it you watch extreme couponing on tlc?? there are some blogs that help, two of them were on the show, one from seattle one from spokane.
there is Krazy coupon lady, extreme coupon 101, and frugal chic living, oh and living rich with coupons! that's just to name a few! It's addictive really!! lol

So does the dollar tree sell the papers for less? You got it I saw the show and thought maybe I can do that. Than my Dauhter in Law said a Aunt of her's does it and saves big time.. Im going to have to check out some of the sites you put up. I have Krazy coupon lady but not the others. Thanks

yea there a dollar?? regular news stand is 2 dollars, but you have to check the papers, sometimes people come and take the ads out thats why I get there early, sometimes they run out!!
