I grew up in Granite Falls!!!Well sorta- I went to Jr. High and High School there. And the Ice Caves are above Granite Falls ...just follow the Mountian Loop Hiway and you'll see the signs for the caves. I forget how far it is from Granite but its a beautiful drive. And the hike to the caves is so nice.I miss going up there to all the hiking trails and camping sites.I just dont have the time anymore. We spent alot of summers up in those woods while I was growing up.
And can you believe Granite Falls has a McDonalds???? So Sad...Lots of things are different up there....I was kinda sad to see the old Tigers Den was gone...They had the best greasy fries!!!

Oh My, I just opened the topic to this post and saw Ice Caves mentioned. PLEEEEZZZZ be extremely cautious if you go near ice caves!!!! There are signs that warn people and even list the accidents that have happened. And they DO happen -- VERY quickly and unexpectedly. In 1998 I was selling my house. A young couple bought it as their first home together. They drove by several times while we were waiting for the papers to process. Her parents came to town and she drove by yet again. On a Monday I got a call asking me to come in the next morning to sign the final papers. When I got home that evening there was another message.... The young woman had been killed in an accident on Sunday!!! The family had gone up to the Ice Caves near Granite Falls, they'd ventured a little ways inside to get a good look. Suddenly the arch caved in. The young woman and her father were buried in ice. Her father was able to get out, but she was crushed. Two in the party were doctors, but were unable to revive her. She died.

Many people ignore the warnings. Some people die for it. Please don't anyone here be one of them!

Keep saying that cause 9 mths of grey, 61* and rain in July is kinda irritating after being raised in CA!

I second that. I grew up on the dry side and don't like the rain. We just had it rain so hard it took out signal for Sat TV Really no kidding.

Ok, now that I've gotten past my initial rant...

Welcome to the person from Clarkston (my folks used to live there and a cousin still does).

Rusty... glad you're feeling better! Heal fast!

And a question for you that are seasoned pros.......
I have just the 2 girls and I'm feeding them layer feed even though Pearl isn't laying yet although she's 5-6 months old.
On Saturday I'm getting an 11 week old French Copper Maran pullet. Is it important that I get her different feed and if so, what? (remember I'm a real novice) I've seen so much conflicting advice that I'm pretty torn. They are in the coop and run nearly all the time but I give them BOSS, scratch, fresh veggies/greens from my garden and grass clippings, and table scraps when we have them (DH loves leftovers).

I want to do right by them, but I'm not anxious to buy a huge bag of feed for one pullet that will switch over in a month or two. What would you do in my place?

Thanks!

I'm apparently in the clear curve of this latest cyclonic system; I've gotten hit by four really intense rain storms today, but none of them lasted more than twenty minutes. It's like a steam bath out there! I need to go out and pick the cup or two of raspberries on my bushes; they were sorely neglected this spring and are full of bedstraw and grass, but the Hamburgs are going to live there very soon.

Speaking of Craigslist, the Lavender Hamburgs are listed again, three of them for $50 dollars. See me not being impulsively optimistic and buying them: no money (the vet bill yesterday also pushed one credit card to the limit) and no space. Pretty birds, though.

I DO NOT claim to be the "resident professional" but from what I have heard you should NOT feed layer until they have begun to lay. I don't feed a feed with added calcium. I feed oyster shell seperate.

That is awful. I remember that well. I was pregnant at the time and went hiking out there with several of my co-workers the day before. We did not go into the caves, but stood close enough to fee the cool air. The girl who died most recently was not even in the caves. She was with her family at what they thought was a safe distance when a hunk of ice fell and rolled forward.

OK Was that a local place.

Yes, it was the tiny place just down from the gates of Lewis and Clark St. Park. My stepmom managed it for a while and so we got volunteered to work there. But the fries with tartar sauce was a good pay off!
