Shower taken, and I ran out and grabbed a frog & inspected it every which way, it was really not happy about it.
But happy to report, the frog is slippery, but no cracks were found, whatsoever.
Now toads may be altogether different....

Chickens, like all birds (I have read it is all birds) have the capibility to sleep with half their brain and be awake with the other half.
They can be asleep on 1 side, and awake on the other.
This is to help protect from predators I guess.

I had no idea! VERY interesting. Thank you Chickielady!

Maybe you can be a myth buster for something that I heard. A friend said that to easily integrate a teenager to the others, put her into the coop in the dead of night. When they all wake up in the morning they all think everything is peachy, that the newbie is one of the regulars! I can see where that MIGHT work in a large flock, but what about mine where newbie will be #3? Two questions instantly come to mind... 1) will the half of the brain that's awake register the "insertion"? 2) are they really that dumb?

Thanks!

hey guess what ?

I found another egg in the nest box ... same color, just very slightly bigger

there was no egg there when I checked at 1:30 this afternoon, but it was there at 5

(it was cold enough that I am sure it was not freshly laid

so, 4 eggs in 6 days

NO EGG SONG that I can tell .... I may have to put a baby monitor in the coop to find out who dunnit

also I can report that they seem to like the junk paper that I put through the shredder, for nest material

DS is moving out for a couple of months -- not his choice -- but he negotiated with the court and will stay at the work release facility in Olympia, instead of languishing in King County Jail

drat him! if we had only KNOWN that he couldn't pony up enough money for insurance !!!!

I guess he felt guilty since we had already paid for the lawyer and the rehab training (latter did not work, he continued to drink, but only after he was safely home in bed)

Yay i just bought a 4 level 2 divided battery brooder for $150. with trays feeders heaters and waterers.... yay!

my ducklings are a week old i have 7 cayugas

hatching more chicks... i have 5 weeks left before i leave......so soon i will be done with chick hatching.

It will depend on if I can drive Farm Truck or not.. the clutch is pretty iffy... (a drive down the road is ok, but it makes me nervous to drive it much farther)

yup.
But they also 'see' everthing.
So if you DO add to the coop, yes, do it in the darness.
The next day they may or may not "approve".
You may have to remove the newbie and do it all over again the next day.
