Oh, all this baby chat is making me wish I could go pick my little 8 lb. infant up out of her bassinet after she woke up. Warm, soft and so cuddly - I want to kiss her sweet baby head again...
Instead, she's in the other room, working on an econ paper, just a few weeks away from heading back to college in Pullman. I miss her like crazy when she's gone.
Who just said they grow so quickly? It's said all the time, but the reality of the words aren't enough to describe the bittersweet sting. RFF - what a wonderful adventure you have begun, starting with the pregnancy and all of it's ups and downs. I am so happy for you. You are going to cherish and love that baby like you never believed possible!

Yes, I totally miss my 33week baby weighing in at 4lbs 12oz. I brought her home from the hosp NICU at 5lbs 9oz. I miss the snuggling, don't miss the feeding part because it wasn't till 4mo that we both figured that out. She gained weight fast & got on her growth chart then too. Now she's almost 7yrs old & 60lbs, going to be taller then me (I'm 5'3", dad is 6'1"). Smartie pants like her dad lol.

I think my most useful things were these:
co-sleeper
flannel cotton bra pads
cotton diapers -( I used disposables when we traveled. Had to pack more outfits then as they don't contain the blow-outs very well, despite the elastic leg opeinings. Another plus to cloth is kids are generally potty trained a year earlier if they can feel that they are wet. The silica in the disposables keeps them too dry.)
Baby Bjorn front pack (I tried several brands and the sling, this was most comfortable for me)
jog stroller
regular stroller
back pack
bouncy seat (my kids both outgrew the swing soon after they were old enough to be put in it as they could reach the support bars)
boppy
onesies
wipes
camera
"boo-Boo Bunnies" (It is amazing how quicly an owie goes away when the plastic ice-cube has a wash-cloth tied aroiund it in the shape of a bunny!)
baby sun-screen

With the exception of the strollers, the expensive items like the crib and high-chair were least used. I also never used bottles. I dried up suddenly when my dad died. Alex was almost 6 months old. He had no problem taking a bottle when my sister gave him one, even though he'd never used one before. Hunger makes sure they'll learn! I took it away and gave him a sippy cup.

Despite what Evergreen Hospital recommended, I loved Binkies. DS used them from birth and was done with them by a year old. I waited to introduce them to DD ... 4 months or whatever the hospital recommended. Her habit was hard to break. I think she was close to 3 years! Screaming fits if I walked down the baby aisle at the grocery store and she did not have one. Every road trip, I caved in and got her some just so it would be quiet in the care while I drove.

All this talk about baby stuff makes me think of one little boy who at 4 still wouldn't give up his bottle. Well he was supposed to be part of a little signing program at church and his mom was having a fit that he wouldn't do it with out the bottle. Grand ma comes to the rescue. She got a little whiskey flask and put a nipple on it for me no no no

I mean HIM. She put the flask in the front pocket of my no no no

HIS sport coat and all was good. The little man with the sport coat with the whiskey flask in the church Christmas program was quite a hit.

What I hate most about parenthood is that if you do it right you end up with independant adults who see you when they want to see you and otherwise are busy living their own lives. I wasn't ready for that to happen, even if I knew that was what I was working hard for.

most everyone tells you to get "onesies" -- but I happened to prefer the full length bodysuit/sleeper that either snaps or zips all the way to the feet

see, my kids had longer torsos than "average", and the snap-crotch rompers compressed the diapers in a way none of us liked

I loved the suits with zippers that went down the front then down one leg ... SO easy to get them on and off

and no problem with snaps disintegrating or coming apart

since I had boys, usually they wore simply t shirts and diapers, with a knitted H shaped buttoned diaper cover
(these days I would go for a velcro closure on those)

for a girl, I'd see a t shirt and a knitted miniskirt over the diaper

then if you have a lower-body problem, you often don't need to change the shirt; if the upper part gets messy, you may not need to change the lower half

well -- back to chickens ! my flock told Krispy-cat "where to get off" this morning ---
I was intending to shepherd them back to the chicken tractor, got distracted by the phone ringing, and found them facing off with the cat who was looking MOST apprehensive about the whole thing

they are a good three inches taller than he is, and they'd outweigh him too, if he weren't so fat
(he sneaks in and eats the dog's food .... )

yesterday I got one blue egg from Phoebe and one green one from Deirdre ... wonder what will show up today?

Exactly. Years ago, the musician Peter Gabriel said "the thing about parenthood, if you do it right, is that it has obsolescence built into it". I've never forgotten that. But still, it's exciting to see our babies grow their wings, even if sometimes that means they fly away.
And there's my bird reference, just to keep me on track.
