I have heard they are susceptible to heat....how hot was it ?

Not very. I think it got up to 85 today? It's usually 5-8 degrees cooler IN the insulated coop (which is in the shade most of the day). It was 76 in there when I went in after work?

I lost all of my large fowl Favs in 2008 when it was 110 for two days straight.

Life, reality gets to them, and hardens them up, and makes childhood vanish.....happens to us all.

I agree! You try to protect them and life still throws some hard curveballs at them and then they aren't your sweet little children anymore.

They may resemble them sometimes, but it's not the same.

That's why my best advice to any new mom is.....enjoy every second as it's happening so you don't wish it away.

Their childhood goes by so quickly! It's almost as if you blink and it's all over, they are independent(sort of)and don't need you anymore(except for money & food).

Alex has hit that grumpy, unhappy stage early - he is in it now. Some days are still good. I blame video games - he gets sucked in and it affects his mood, just like it does with DH.
I can join the grump fest because I feel like venting too. I took the kids to CA for 8 days to visit family. I asked DH to feed dogs and chickens, and water plants which he did do. But that is ALL he did. He made bacon and eggs for breakfast most days and pizza and beer for dinners. He left EVERYTHING on the counter tops, egg-shells and all. If a pan got too filled with bacon grease, he'd just pull another one out and dirty it as well. He tracked mud, feathers and wood shavings throughout the house because he did not bother to wipe his feet, and there are 9 piles of cat poo dried up on the hall rug.

He's so proud of himself that he cared for the animals and spray -painted out where I would like a walkway to go.

I asked DS to help me clean up the place and he just complains and does as little as possible. When I was mowing the lawns today, DD decided to flick paint-brushes of watercolor over some of her drawings because she looked up the illustrator of a children's book and he showed some of his techniques. Now there is paint on the table, floor and wall.

First -- sorry if I went *poof* and gave anyone a fright. I was suddenly summoned out of town - right in the midst of dealing with the coyote
barnie.gif
I was sure that by the time I got home that durn 'yote would have absconded with the remainder of my chickens!! Well -- they did get 3 more
hit.gif
- so I am down to just 11. BUT -- the week of forced chicken-keeping has sold the DW.

So-- All the wire is here, most of the posts for a 7' tall 50' x 30' run. This will surround my (her?) current coops, giving me (us?) room for an additional coop should the DW (birds?) require one. (I'm
th.gif
too -- but they are 'her' birds now she will collect the eggs and I'm in charge of maintenance and construction, and feeding and watering, and coop cleaning and anything else that is not collecting the eggs.

So -- sorry to feak ya'll.

So -- I need rooster for my current 11 birds. I don't care about breed but I would like a well behaved roo.

I need new birds for my 2nd coop. I am looking for egg layers who refuse to lay a white egg (phoey on you Ron

)

This weekend is a wonderful time for a drive around the state gathering up a good laying flock. One that will no longer feed the wildlife of Yakima County

I have several very nice roos. The very best I'm willing to part with is Remus. He is a gorgeous, sweet big, exhibition black orpington that I got as a tiny chick from Cowgirlgrace in February. He and his brother Serius Black get along fine, and they are both quite friendly and hang out with my layers. They have the shiniest feathers with lots of irridescent greens and purples. I really only want one of these big orps, but there is no way I'd send such a friendly guy to freezer camp, so I still have both of them. They are good boys. My dogs got out one afternoon and the hens did not know to be afraid of them as they are harmless when I am in the yard with them. One of the dogs got a little rough while "playing" with the hens, and both orps went after them and got between the hens and the dogs.

The goofy OE from Chickielady is gorgeous too - He looks like a blue ameraucauna with his poofy cheeks and beard, but he has yellow hackles and saddle feathers and burgundy feathers on his wings. He is not as paranoid as he was before as I pick him up every evening when he goes on the roosting bar. He no longer flies into walls.

I also have 2 Barnevelder roos. Both used to be friendly, and though they do not attack, I would no longer call them friendly, they are cautious of people and keep an eye on all around them. The Barnies are in a tractor so are used to confined places. When I let them out to free-range, Flop hangs with the hens while Duracell guards the perimiters and approaches and fluffs himself up to look big at any living thing that enters the space. I need to get rid of Flop, the runt, as Duracell, my big, handsome roo, is no longer very tolerant of Flop, so Flop has a hard time getting to the feeders without getting flogged by Duracell. I also don't want more than 6 birds in my tractor.

On the young side, I have 3 BCM cockerals hatched June 1, and 3 bantam cochin cockerals hatched in May. I would not put these with adult birds.

I am in North Bend, but am willing to drive to Cle-Elum as I need to head out that was to get fruit.

I think CL will be taking Flop and the OE (Stewie) tomorrow, so let me know ASAP.

Well, good. Glad you're back!

The war against coyotes continues here, also: I lost my cat, not any more chickens, but my cousin's Mother-in-Law saw SIX pups up on the hill at dawn the other morning. What gets me is that the ground is pretty much crawling with rabbits, but the coyotes prefer pets and egglayers.

Thought I had made a real bad impression that day I met you and your DW!
