Watermelons actually did not start out red when they were first around.

And whatever Hermiston has, I'm sure any well known heirloom variety can beat. (Moon and Stars, Ali Baba, Orangeglo, Rattlesnake, Sugar Baby, etc)

Watermelons grown on large scales are rarely truly GOOD because they're varieties bred for production and seedlessness, not flavor.

And I say again (and add to) IF IT AINT RED, FROM HERMISTON AND HAS SEEDS it aint a watermelon! They all started in Hermiston and red then people tried to make em better. NOT !!!

So sorry- we're only a month and a bitout from loosing Zathras, and no matter how distracting the kittens are, the absence is still noticible.

I've been looking at Kittens online. DD and DS have been asking for kittens since we lost Fern to kidney failure a few months back. DH said he'd like to try kittens next as he is hoping for a few years of good health before we deal with the cost and heartache of kitties with health issues. I personally would like something between 1 and 3 years old as they likely won't have the issues of the old cats we usually adopt. DH wants to wait at least a month before we get more cats, but I am looking at these:

Hey! I have a friend trying to find homes for 3 kittens. A siamese, a black & white, and a gray multi colored 1. (I don't know much about cats) Sorry! If you are interested let me know and I can text you pictures of them!

It's pretty, too.

I look at that, and I really, really wish I liked melon. So pretty! So refreshing in hot weather! Such a wonderful juicy crunchy texture! But they all taste like soap to me

(So do raw cucumbers).

They still grow a lot of the big old Black Diamond in Hermiston.

Did you ever read... darn, I can't remember if it was T. Barry Brazelton or Bill Moyers, I think the first because I remember discussing the article with my FIL and he was acquainted with Brazelton, both being from Waco - anyway, writing about how real watermelons were the huge, long, dark green ones that were only good for a few hours after they were cut, and so you had to invite the whole neighborhood to eat them before they went bad, and it was a waste of a good thing to try to eat them and not get the juice on yourself? And how they weren't expensive or rare, they were just really good, and something which was properly an item of generosity.

It was a tradition back in the first half of the twentieth century to take a pickup over to Hermiston with the back full of gunny sacks full of bran or straw, and bring back the Hermiston's under wet sacks, over White Pass so you had to be careful they didn't accidentally freeze, for Fourth of July or Labor Day picnics. You can still get the big good old-fashioned kind at some stores and at produce stands right before Labor Day.

Man I really wish I liked watermelon.

Holey Moley RFF!!! I'm so glad you guys made it out ok and that everything is alright!

Ok this is it for this part of the night crew! I have a house full of teenagers and they have been watching Harry Potter since 9:30am today. They will continue watching the rest of them tomorrow and then we caravan to the theater to watch Deathly Hallows part 2 for the last time. Our theater is not showing it anymore after tomorrow so this is our farewell until it is out on DVD. Ok we really just like to party and we use any excuse we can!!
