Entries close for the Puyallup Fair Open Show Wed Aug 30. If you're a poultry person, and you're going to go to the fair anyway, you should definitely enter a bird or two. Each exhibitor gets 3 fair tickets. Since it's $10 to get in the gate and $2.50 to enter a chicken, the math is pretty easy. Birds go in Wed Sep 7- a bad day for many of us since it's the first day of school, but you have from noon to 8 pm to check in your birds, so it's not too bad. You pick them up Sunday night. The fair feeds and waters and there is a vet check to catch parasites or contagious diseases. This year is also the big Serama Table Top show, so, if you have any of those little guys, be sure to enter them twice- once in the bantam show, once in the Table top show Friday night. This year is on-line entries and I HATED it. Don't do what I did and be happily entering birds for several people without saving the cart- I lost a lot of tedious typing. At least it went faster the second time around. The junior show is different- 2 weeks later and paper entry forms, it also has a later closing time. Entries there are free and the kids always get excellent premium money, so we usually bring all our birds to the junior show, but just our best to the Open Show. You'll see lots of back yard feed store birds, though. All the locals know about the free tickets and drag in an old hen or two. Here is the link:

When exactly is the 4H chicken show? There's a minor chance that I'll go up on a Monday during the fair, I'd love to see the chickens and it's not too long of a drive, which Stevenson definitely is. Next week is way too soon, though, my son is moving that week.

Kim sorry to hear about your pullet. Time for lead injections and dirt naps. SSS
WA4-Hpoultrymom sorry to hear about Kelby. Yes I remember him being very ill a while back.

to anyone else going through rough times.

I have barely made enough to cover my costs and a few $$ at the threshing bee. But Luckily I had thrown a in a bunch of litterely OLD JUNK that was going in the next load of scrap. And to make it better I didn't price any of it I have just been telling people make me a reasonable offer. Amazingly thos offers have all been more than I would have asked for the items. I only sold 2 pieces of art. The star in the pic and a little tack hanger. I am so done being a rotisserie chicken will be so glad when I have everything packed up and back home tomorrow night.
And yes I was so totally bad today. Not only did I forget to put the sunblock on but forgot to tell dw to also. At least she was only there until noon and stayed in the shade most of the time .

I hate to even ask but which girl did he get???? I'm so sorry ! I know you are very attached to your girls!. Last Tues at 10:30am I was up on a ladder and my girls were in the big run. I heard them squawk. and looked up and saw the female Bobcat walking along the fence and into the woods.

My Splash OE from CL.
I am still cursing about it.

I should have been out there! I usually sit outside either in front with them or on my deck swing so I can hear them right away.
I wasn't there!
She died in my arms.

I have to wonder how many bobcats there are around lately. When I was a kid there was a big hound-hunt through the Capital Forest (Black Hills, between US 8 and US 12, west of I-5, east of Elma) and there'd be photos in the sports section of the paper with dozens of bobs and four or five cougars laying on the ground in front of the hunters and their pack. Every year. Year after year. I've only seen one in the wild once, on White Pass in the very early morning, but I've seen their prints in sand banks on the Nisqually. They're much stealthier than any other predator, and small enough to hide in very little cover. I know that when the Sensitive Species Survey was done the study on Bobcats was done by the Game Department, since they were legally hunted then and they went on hunting permit returns, which were stable (the Lynx, on the other hand, was already protected when that survey was going on in 1979-1981 and had been for a while, mostly on the strength of falling hunt reports).

Which comes down to my point: I don't think you can effectively control predation, in the long term, by shooting small predators. Once they're within your fences, yes- but once they're there there's almost certainly been some luck. With bobcats I think there's a chance to limit fence penetration by clearing cover on the outside of the fence and having proximity lights or sprinklers- especially having no trees overhanging the fence. But I suspect that if you're going to free range at all there's an irreducible minimum of birds which will be taken by something.

Here is an odd question for anyone and everyone.........

Does anyone here on BYC dabble in residential property investing? If so please PM me. I am looking for an investor for a nice property here in Bonney Lake that comes with a very responsible renter who is willing to share duck eggs!
