yes something is wrong, I never have any smell in mine. So what are you doing?

OK, so I start with one cushy layer of straw, then they add a layer of poo, then I add layer of straw then they add a layer of poo and it smells like amonia.

I don't feed them when they are in there. So nye nye and in they go, no food, no water, just bed time. AND THEY JUST LAY AROUND, NO PERCH ( THEY ARE DUCKS)

one thing you might try, when they've left a layer of poo and they aren't in the coop, sprinkle some DE on top of the poo before you add the straw

it will dry the poo out -- wet poo stinks, dry poo doesn't smell much

alternatively add some sand .... it doesn't ABSORB the moisture, it allows it to evaporate, and it won't rot and get ammoniacal like straw does

of course you might have some issues with the bottoms of their feet walking on gritty sand

another option might be to use some of the "organic" cat litters, made from pine pellets or recycled paper, then you can scoop out the clumps --- both are supposed to help control the ammonia odor from cat leavings ...

question -- do they tend to lay around in the SAME place every time? you might put a different kind of bedding there if that is so

She's out foraging with the Spitz today instead of hanging around the Brabanters pen making pitiful noises. That is a step in the right direction. She's also pecking back when Dotty and Dolly peck her. She will be assimilated.

I saw a spitz on the home page of BYC.
Black & white, but I like the tea colour better...now if I can only get that in my Runner Ducks.

At night, they just find a spot and sit there all night I guess. But maybe I will change to shavings again. It seems to give me cleaner eggs.

So...I wanted to get an Ameracauna (sp?) when I ordered my chicks, but Meyer didn't have any for the time I ordered. There is a place in town that has them, but they hatched on 8/10. Mine are from 8/29. Is that too much difference?

I got a pretty little lavender Ameraucana from Pips & Peeps last spring. She's been laying some nicely colored blue green eggs. Unfortunately, now that she's free ranging, she's decided to lay them in a spot under a bush in the garden. At least it's the same spot everyday, but I feel like I'm on an Easter Egg hunt everyday crawling around and looking for colored eggs.

Don't know if Pips and Peeps has anything available right now in lavender, but she was nice enough to bring my chicks to the show in Monroe last spring. I'm guessing she'll be going to Stevenson this fall too?

maybe that last egg needs to go in the incubator with the one that was rockin and rollin

Did that. No sign of anything from the last 2 eggs though... I'm not quite ready to give up yet. I'll wait and see if there's anything going on with them tomorrow since I finally have an afternoon off again.
