In case you don't get an answer on your question: How much dirt is she eating? or is she picking through and finding little bits of gravel and rocks and eating them? My beds are sand. Remember this is how a chicken "digests" or "chews" its food. The food and rocks, gravel, etc are in the gizzard. The gizzard muscle then contracts and the rocks/gravel are used to munch the food down so that it can go further into the "process". I am sure there are more experience bird owners who can explain the process better: CL? Illia? anyone. But yes they do eat "dirt".

I do know about the gizzard and that they eat small gravel, I just didn't know they would eat plain old brown dirt. She isn't picking out any small gravel, she just kind of scoops the dirt with the side of her beak. I saw one of the others do it too, so I guess it's okay, lol. She is also eating her food, not just dirt, so I'm not too worried. I gave them some watermelon last night, and one of them ate a seed or two, but the rest is still there. Not interested at all. Like Ariloveschickens, I thought they would love it. Oh well.

Thanks for answering. Oh, and what kind of sand do you have? I went to Lowe's today to get a bag for their dust bath corner, and who knew there was three kinds!

I had a dump truck of sand brought in. I bought "washed" sand. My sand is 4-6 inches deep in my runs. It makes it nice and easy to clean them.

Try cutting the watermelon up into tiny bite size pieces, put them on/in their goodie tray and let them try. they just don't know yet. How old are they again? When mine were pretty young we went to Petco and bought live meal worms....WOW....what a show the chicks gave us...they loved them. BTW, mine were skeptical of whole watermelon at first too. Now, if I put a rind in the run with some melon on it....I will come back the next day and all that is left is a thin layer of the rind. EVERYTHING else is gone.

RFF: Glad to hear that the fire is under control. We do live in the area don't we? driving down Miller the other day and some idiot (I actually know who he is) was burning a pile of brush. I should have called and turned him in.There was nothing directly around it (just dirt and sprinklers), but just a breath of wind away was a nice (approx 5 acres) of dry pasture. Tall grass - all dry. Idiot.

It's time again for our annual Oktoberfest!!!

When:

Saturday SEPTEMBER 24 starting at 4pm

Where:

The Ogre Castle (my place in North Bend)

I need you all to attend - I don't want the place just filled with a bunch of computer geeks talking tech; we need some chicken in there.
CL and her DH will be there
hopefully you will be too!

Plenty of beer and sausage, Kartofel too and German beer drinking tunes to set the mood.

PM me for my address and phone number, and post if you will be coming.

Hope to see you all!

Kids are welcome - there is a small indoor pool and a trampoline. Unfortunately, the playground is gone to make room for the chicken coop. Bring life jackets if you would like them to swim - I think I got rid of all our small liife jackets.

Holy Cow!!! I have been picking my pea pods as they ripen for over a week now, but I am only getting a few each day. I doubt I have more than a cup of shelled peas in my freezer

Silly girly ya gotta put more in the freez than the mouth (like DFK alway do).

Used up my surplus energy today cutting my hair very carefully; I'd been taking advantage of the fact that my hair's really thick and somewhat curly and just putting it in a ponytail and whacking off the surplus for too many months and it had gotten to the point where I had no choice but wear it up all the time so today I sectioned it and cut it very carefully and it's much better. I'd like to go to a beauty shop and get it professionally cut, but whatever it is I'm sensitve to is in all of them any more, I can't even walk downwind of them.

Still no egg from Sylvia, which is worrisome- she laid an egg six days in a row around about the 20th of August, and three since, including one that got stepped on. There's never any broken shells or other evidence of the egg being eaten, and she's not acting sick, she's just not laying anything.

ARGH.
