I don't usually post to this thread.....

I'm more of a lurker but live in SW WA.

I'm having a farm sale this week, I have a muscovy duck pair, a couple Creme d' Argent baby boy bunnies and some Easter egger roosters (gorgeous) for sale.

Has the price of feed SHOT up for everyone else? Layena went from 13.99 a bag to 17.99 a bag in two weeks!

It was time to trim my flock of everyone non-productive and I don't need three roos! They are just learning to crow so they are good for a laugh.

Nope, everything's gone up: Midwest floods this spring washed out a lot of corn*/kept a lot of corn* from being planted in time, and the hot weather reduced yields. Add to that increases in fuel prices and SHAZAM: feed prices are going to be high for at least the next eleven months.





*Corn prices drive all livestock feed prices even if you don't feed much corn, because the big guys who do, normally, feed corn (feed lots and confinement pig operations) start looking for cheaper alternatives which drive up the prices for those feeds, right down to the port dust which is normally the cheapest thing you can get.

Well that was quite a jump, especially for us where rabbit pellets jumped about a month or so ago (up about five bucks a bag). We were lucky to get a great deal on hay this year (three dollars a bale

) so that helps even things out, but I need to sell of the animals that are sort of being "pets" right now. I haven't found that my muscovy produce any ducklings for me OR many eggs, and my drake is huge. He is really a cute pet but I have lots of cute animals here that also produce something. Goat feed also went up in price but it has been creeping up slowly and the Layena/flock raiser prices just shot up overnight. We tried Nutrena feed this month, it was a few dollars cheaper a bag. We'll see if it stays that way. The rabbits especially are not fond of the Nutrena.

As for my Easter Egger roos, they are just so gorgeous! I have plans for freezer camp, but it is hard to eat such a gorgeous bird. Why can't my hens be as pretty? It isn't fair.

I was extremely lucky that I incubated four and ALL four were pullets? What are the chances of that?

Class is $5 and the chickens are $15 each.

We'll start Saturday at 3pm. Bring a friend! Bring a cutting board and a freshly sharpened knife.

Ergh. I was planning to run out to the Puyallup fair today to see the chickens, but some stuff has come up connected to a Gala fundraiser at the theater and it looks like I may have to miss the fair to cover where some other folks dropped the ball, and be running all over the place this afternoon instead.

Does anyone know offhand how long the chickens will be exhibited this weekend? Will they still be there on Monday or are they going home tomorrow?

I would suggest going and learning if you are inclined.

Something I would show for free, but heck, it is really good knowledge.
