I use about 4" of sand on top of bare ground, and about an inch or so inside the coop. It works great, easy to clean, don't have to keep buying more, no smelly degrading matter. Runs only get muddy if soil drainage is bad and/or it's in a depression. Grading the soil to drain away from the run is always a good idea.

I read a series of posts elsewhere on BYC talking about feeding fresh figs to the hens and getting more eggs than usual. Maybe you could give it a try!

Today I am finishing staining the decks. Then I still have much work to do on several temp coops to get them winter ready.

Lots and lots of egg laying going on with the young pullets and much molting going on in the 12-18 month olds.

I have 4 bantam blue/black (split for lavender) cochin cockerels and 2 BLRW (splash) cockerels and one Crele Old English Game Bantam cockerel that need to go if anyone is interested in them, please pm me.

Hey CR, I have about 60 nice Muscovies (from 6 weeks to 18 months), but not sure which ones are laying, and they seems to take turns. Only had a few this week. I'll try to figure out which ones are laying. Let you know (I'm in OLY)

Tamara, is there still going to be a black BLRW for me some day? I'm looking at what I have and what I want and that seems to be the thing I need for the (develop superior line of BLRW) part of my plans.
