oh, and for those who weren't at the south-sound meet-up, Julia took a dozen of my hatching eggs too --- either to tuck under a broody or to fire up her BIL's Sportsman incubator ....

with all these chicks hatching out, we should be able to infer what genes this flock of mine are carrying ... I didn't know, until Illia mentioned it, that many of the hatchery EEs are carrying Columbian genes (even if they LOOK like ordinary gold duckwing types)

I guess the September rains are starting

anyone with wild blackberries -- better pick any that are ripe, because you know that

mold is just WAITING to grow on them

the yard needs this rain --- the chickens are NOT happy about it

(they don't know that their preferred weeds will be growing madly in a couple of days)

If a chick hatches out with very well defined stripes like a chipmunk - (in the center)

It is a straight-up duckwing.

If a chick hatches out kinda chocolately colored, or kind of a marbled black and brown or brown and gray or the sorts - It has Columbian in it.

A male with Columbian does not look like an ordinary duckwing, he'll differ quite some.

A female may look like an ordinary Duckwing, except she's blander in color. No salmony or red breast, less gold tickling in the neck, and usually a solid white or solid brown underside.

In case y'all wanted to know

We picked LOADS of blackberries already, all from our yard. Sadly the Himalayan/Fence types are super abundant, while the good ones with the whole leaves are really pathetic this year.

You mean it could be his heart? They did an x-ray of almost his whole body and blood tests. His white blood cell count was a little low, but everything else looked great and healthy. Really? His heart? That doesn't sound good.

My old pomeranian has congestive heart failure (CHF)....she coughs a lot.. The doctor - up to this point - has recommended she not be on heart meds as she is also diabetic. The cough is becoming so constant that we need to go talk to the doc and weigh our options. It has something to do with (you vet techs pipe in any time) the heart not pumping hard enough so fluid builds up in the lungs.....I don't know for sure...but it involves heart and fluid in the lungs. Look up CHF and you can learn more.

Talked to the vet again yesterday and his heart looked normal to them on the x-ray and his lungs are clear. There is a narrowed area of his esophagus. They can't tell what it is on x-ray and the radiology people don't think that ultrasound is going to tell us much because of where it is located. So it liiks like we will probably do a CT next Thursday. I am hoping that miraculously this all clears up as fast as it came on. My DH and I will have to decide what to do after that. I am trying really hard right now to stay positive. And hope that it is a fairly easy fix once we find out what the problem is. It is so hard to make choices about the life and/or death of a beloved pet. I am truly hoping I don't have to make that choice just yet.

thanks Illia, this IS good to know

so I was altogether wrong on the "dark chick" assumption

I know my dark mink-brown chick (with no apparent chipmunk striping) turned into my spectacular roo --- and given the chicks that have hatched from his get, seems he is definitely carrying Columbian not Dominant White --- thanks for encouraging me to hatch (or get someone to hatch) some of the fertile eggs

it's going to be fun to see what Dawn's chicks look like, and with any luck at all, Julia's in about three weeks

Well I did want to know, but that still doesn't mean I can decipher what these EE chicks of Candy's are! I'll have to read your description about 20 times while I look at the pictures. This is too much like math for me.

Yes, the avatar EE is a cross, the sire was Buff Orp/Ameraucana, and the mother a Buff Ameraucana, so she ends up 3/4 Ameracuana. She's not the one I'm talking about. The pullet with the feathered legs is a cross between the brother of the avatar (Orp/Am), and a buff Ameraucana hen. The feathering isn't heavy - outside of leg only. She lays a nice blue/turquoise egg so I'm keeping her. It's raining right now - get a pic when it stops.
