He grows in plastic bags he had peach trees that were in (I think) 7 gal bags that he said (and I don't doubt it) would produce 200# per year. They were so heavy the limbs were on the ground. He 7000 strawberry plants in 72' x 6' of the tubes. He said the same as one acre on land.

Hope y'all had a restful night sleep and did not get up an hour before your alarm went off because the person on the other side of the bed was snoring like a gravel crusher.

I did sleep well, but sorry if that was your night! I would get a seperate room - but it's hard enough to sleep w/o that kind of noise! (Insomnia sucks!)

Some good news on the chick front - I could not figure out which chick was the "weak" one this morning - so it must be doing better

I am going to go crazy here at work today! I want to be home checking on them every hour!

And here are some fun pics to start your day

Messy Faces! from yesterday's rainy day and playing under the porch (currently under construction so lots of bugs!)

Cute! Glad the little chick is doing better. Loved seeing the pics you've posted.
I just went out to say good morning to the chicks and big girls and noticed the Faverolles were looking a little less than fresh. Those beards are pretty when they're clean but scraggly when they get wet.
Also noticed something odd on one of the Faverolles backs just above her tail feathers when I petted her. Dry, hard, crusty feathers - I started to worry, then realized it's more than likely that someone pooped on her last night when she was on the lower roost. Nice. And I touched it. Trying to figure if a hen bath fits into my schedule today.

Miss Whitey Ford was waiting at the door of the mini coop this morning so I decided to let her and the chicks out to free range with everyone this morning. The chicks are 3 weeks old tomorrow and I know she's watchful of them, but they're still so little. They're having a hay day while she teaches them how to look for stuff in the wet ground though. Looked like they were having a lot of fun. So what is the origin of the phrase "hay day"?

Apparently there are different answers.

Webster's II New Riverside Dictionary defines Heyday -- A time of maximum power, prosperity, or popularity.

"HEYDAY goes back to an Anglo-Saxon use of 'hey' as an expression of great enthusiasm and happiness. So a person's 'heyday' is the period of his greatest vigor and success." From "Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins" by William and Mary Morris (HarperCollins, New York, 1977, 1988).

Hay
day is an old saying that means an easy day, plenty of play. It was said that a horse would rather eat hay than graze all day for the same amount of feed.

Aww, he's so pretty. Hope he finds a good home. So you're narrowing your focus on different breeds now? Does that mean you're dropping your Shamo project as well? We haven't seen or heard anything of them for a long time.

Oooooh no!! I'm not dropping my Shamos. I'm just dropping the Black Copper boys and the extra girls, that's all. I still have my best of the best Black Copper hens, but just no boys. Nothing else is changing.

My Shamos don't have much news going on because the hen just finished molting, and before that was taking care of her last chick of a batch that got eaten by a cat. (who's now dead) So, we're starting over, trying again. . .

This is my Shamos lately though.

- My boy is molting, the hen just finished molting. I don't know their definite weight, but my cock stands at about 28 inches tall, possibly more, I just had him stand near a fence then measure where he stood at the fence when he was away. I can never get him to actually stand still for a personal measure though - He ducks his head in a lot.
