I need another coop. I wonder if DH, the neighbors and the city would mind?

I think EVERYONE should have at least TWO coops

if your DH,neighbors or city object.... I have plenty of room for you to put one or two coops. We share 12 acres with the Landlord

.. I can even tell you what kind of chickens I would like... or I mean what I think you should put in there

HA! I was going to offer the same things....we have 10 acres here with another 125 in DNR. You can't build a structure on that, but you could probably get away with a few (dozen) chicken tractors!

I use the temperature controller for the heat in the greenhouse. But I also cover the green house roof with as many layers as I can during a really cold spell. I have more than enough light in it, with the grow light. It seems to help with energy consumption. I have also replace most of the wall and roof panels. I got the greenhouse from Harbor Freight. The panels that came with it were not high quality thermal panes. I have been slowly replacing the panels this past year. So it is much better insulated than before. I have one more set of panels to get done before it gets super cold. The replacement panels are 40.00 each and will only fill two spots, out of 8 spots on the roof alone. I still have the sides next to the chicken coop to replace and 3 full panels on the back end of the greenhouse. So what just another 240.00 to complete the upgrade.

The new panels are thicker than the original panels too. This makes swapping them out not easy. Of course it doesn't help that DH wire tied the whole thing together. The first year or two we had the greenhouse, we spent a lot of time putting it back together every time the wind would blow.

I discovered very quickly that the single layer of plastic didn't hold in much heat. I covered the greenhouse with winter weight row cover. It retains more heat at night, and is less likely to overheat during the day (I want things to stay dormant). I hold the row cover in place with rocks and big safety pins.
The cover also means I can put orchids in there during the summer.

I'm grateful that this gh came with corrugated panels. I am amazed at how much better the new stuff is. I have overwintered geraniums for the past 3 years. As long as I treat for mold and fungus, it's worked out well. I also have an orchid and a lemon tree that has survived the winter. I have had problems with over heating in the summer. For the most part I have just left the door, and roof vent open to help with that. I would love to have something more automatic and with a fan. But that will have to wait until we when the lottery.

So where does one buy the plastic for the runs? I have always wanted to try wrapping the runs in plastic to prevent some of the nasty wind from barreling down on the coop in the winter months...I will need A LOT of plastic....I looked at the drop clothes yesterday at wal-mart but they'd be shredded in about 2 minutes.

Good heavens. Wonder if we know them.... I'll have to look that up and see. And remind my dad to lock the garage door.

Locking the garage door isn't a bad idea. I wonder how you do that? With the dog door, the size it is, there isn't much point. This was such a nice safe house before we moved in.

I could lend Ron one of my bators too. That way he could have a lot of white egg layers.

Poor baby. I loved the photos you posted of her yesterday. Brought back the sad memory of when Lily was getting her shots at 2 months. She had been smiling, talking, and interacting with the nurse who said, "Oh no, I'm going to feel really bad in a minute." She gave Lily the shot and without taking her eyes off of the nurses, Lily's little face just crumpled with an expression of shock and betrayal as she began to cry. Broke my heart - I think the nurse and I both cried along with her.

Hope Audrey is feeling better soon.

She's doing okay this morning...she (and I) took a 2.5 hour nap....she got another bottle and then fell back to sleep on me for 45 minutes and probably would still be asleep, except I really had to pee!

She's on her mat smiling and kicking her legs. She loves that thing! It's the one that plays music & jungle noises...along with flashing lights.

Naps are good things. I wish I could take a nap, right now or ever, without being sick or more than five days on into sleep deprivation.

Kids are funny about how they react to shots: the elder one was always very zen about it, although that may have been because the nurse he had knew all the sweet-spots and never hurt me, either, when I got vaccines or blood draws. His sister yelled up a storm, but that was sort of her approach to the entirely of life right up until this day.

She also was one of the babies who had a reaction to the bad old Pertussis vaccine, and got only the DT part until she was three- I was paranoid for the whole time, having witnessed an infant case of pertussis in my neighborhood as a child. She got her whole whooping cough series late, which meant she was the only one with active immunity when the rest of the family was exposed to a whooping cough outbreak in 1998 or 99 and all of us got sick for a couple of weeks. HORRIBLE disease.

So, yeah: vaccinations: sometimes frightening but the contrary state is much worse.
