agreed, but to me it looks more like an ash ??

No, there's paired saracens on the branches, and the bud pattern is definitely maple. Not to mention I'm familiar with it in full leaf- I do go to Church often enough for that (and have gone there for nine years at least).

Those little red crawlies are the Famous Great Northern Fowl MITE.

Go to any Pet Store (Petco, PetSmart, etc) and go to the caged bird dept.
There look for MITE spray.
Then go home, have help if you are scared, and first thing in the morning while the birds are cooped (not loose) go into the coop, grab each one, flip them upside down, like a baby & have a helper spray their nether regions, while you flip their butt fuzz to & fro........
The spray is permethrin, and will kill the mites FAST!
P.S. These crawlies cannot live on humans, so do not stress about that.
This works really well...especially if you only have a few birds.
I use Eprinex, drops on the back of the neck 2X a year..kills all external & internal parasites.
But Eprinex is spendy, and will expire if not used up.
So not for someone with just a few birds.
Hope this works....works for me

Permethrin has no egg withdrawal, but does not kill internal parasites, just the crawlies on the outside...so it is a start, and inexpensive!
You can buy 2 bottles & spray the roosts & nest boxes as well.
repeat in a week.
Mite eggs can hatch out again in 1 week or so~~

Permethrin can be had for greater quantities for a much lower price at any feed store. Either buy the concentrate (which they often use on cattle) or buy horse fly spray. Look at the active ingredient to see if it is permethrin. I like to use permethrin/pyerethrin combo when I use that.

Thank you CGG. That sounds fairly simple. But what about the coop? Do I have to disinfect it and change all the shavings?

Also, for ALL use use ivermectin or eprinex.... please please PLEASE rotate with a product with a different class of active ingredient (like permethrin) since resistance has started to be a issue in some areas. Rotation helps to get the bugs which may be resistant to one chemical class.

I must say I have used the Eprinex and before used the Ivomectin and I am a Eprinex fan now!!!!!!!
I doesd all my flocks about 2 mon ago, and there is not 1 bug on any bird anywhere.
I just looked at all of them today..and they look great!
Using Ivomectin before, and still would have occasional mites...so Eprinex solves all the problems & is so easy to deal with when you have so many birds.
LOVE IT!!!

I'm glad to hear this. We also used Ivermectin in the past, and then we lost Meg's cochin to mites 2 weeks ago. We finally got the Eprinex in and dosed EVERY single bird again last weekend, even though we gave them all Ivermectin in early August. We will repeat next weekend too.

To preserve effectiveness rotate, rotate, rotate. Ivermectin used to be super effective, but in some areas resistance is building. Permethrin, pyrethrins, seven dust are all some additional options. I also spray my coops down whenever I do a full coop strip.

I am serious, usually this time of year, when birds are moulting, we get lice..after feather shaft.....and the mites follow.
I doesd 2 mo ago, and looked at every bird today so as what will go to the show, and not 1 bug...I am jazzed!
The 3/4 full bottle of Ivomectin I have will go to the dump!!!!!!
I am so glad you got Eprinex!
You will be glad, too!

Give it to someone, not the dump. Still very useful for worms etc and in other species.

Call Jean Ribbeck. Maybe she has some final cuts to make and has some available. She already got rid of a bunch, so call soon and I hope you find a good one!

So, Happy Belated Birthday to 4312! (Who is probably busy getting to this side of the mountains right about now.)

thank you Sadie.
Just got back to my brother's house after dinner. Iam in Yakima and plotting my trip to Chehalis. I am thinking 2.5 hours.
All is looking good. I am excited.

So good to meet you (again) and actually get to talk. So glad we all stayed together! Your daughter is adorable and tell her I'm sorry if I reeked when we hugged goodbye (chickens+ no shower = stinky)

We used Ivermectin in the fall and then Valbezen in spring on the cattle for about ten years, up until last year, and now use Eprinex for both spring and summer this year since it's effective against tapeworm (which Ivermectin isn't). There has been a problem with aquired resistance ever since the modern antihelminthics were developed; I don't even remember all the things we've used in the last thirty or forty years. The old-style extremely toxic wormers were so broad-spectrum that they were barely safe for mammals and also were much more damaging to the soil biota but acquired resistance wasn't as much of a problem. Dad's insistance on moving animals onto clean pasture (stuff they hadn't been on since the previous summer) after worming harked back to the old method of parasite control: moving animals away from their own waste at frequent intervals. Great plan, but expensive in terms of land, structures, and labor!

OK Mr Rustler! I'm only going to say this once! Waa Waa Waa, somebody call the Wambulance. You have a hundred people for you and one against. Stop letting the one person bug you and make you feel like you want to quit the show. You have the support and encouragement of EVERYONE else so COWBOY UP and stop whining.

Look,.. there was only one person that I know of that had hard feelings,.... and I am going to do two things #1) explain why and #2) tell you that before the end of day one of the show the person who was upset was over it and talking to him,..
So, the fellow who was upset has been a vendor at this show for years, and, a member of the club/ participant for as long as the show has been going. So, when a new vendor comes in and, die to communication errors, didn't have a pre-assigned vendor space and gets a spot right by the door while the long-time vendor is on the back wall between the restrooms... well, that's why there were some questions asked. There were no curse words, no yelling. Really. I don't understand why this stuff ends up on here?

I hope all of you had as good of a time as I did
