For eggs I've had excellent luck with runner (and they have light green eggs which are beautiful) but am selling all of mine because I love duck meat but don't bake much so I don't use many eggs- so muscovies and appleyards are the two meat ducks I've liked best so far.

thank you Sadie.
Just got back to my brother's house after dinner. Iam in Yakima and plotting my trip to Chehalis. I am thinking 2.5 hours.
All is looking good. I am excited.

So good to meet you (again) and actually get to talk. So glad we all stayed together! Your daughter is adorable and tell her I'm sorry if I reeked when we hugged goodbye (chickens+ no shower = stinky)

Jen : Very much had fun. I didmake it back to my brother's. Did find my way out of Chehalis (thank you CR) afterI had my truck hit - while I was stopped at a red light. It was a young girl trying to go around me to get into the left hand turn lane. I see no damage on my truck - maybe a smudge - DH will give it the true go over tomorrow....but it wiped out her poor little car's side mirror. I was shaking...she was shaking...I had been furious, then I saw this poor scared young lady. I did not want to come off as the crazy B**** that was going to kill her cuz she hit my truck - it is only a truck (I need to keep it in perspective - no one was hurt).

I learned sooooo much this weekend I cannot believe it.

CR the cage I got from you works great. I was able to take Gimp(the cockerel) and the two pullets and put them all in it when I got here to Yakima.....they are getting to know one another - they are keeping each other warm....and it has a lot of space in it. Unfortunately, for the ride home they will have to go back into the totes. Just not warm enough in the back of the truck.

The pass was wonderful....almost 40 degrees all the way home....after getting out of the fog, it was sunshine all the way, beautiful.

eta: DD says thank you...and I must admit....I think (most of the time) is cute. She did not notice you being stinky - and I doubt (very much) that you were.

Thankyou everyone for making this such a fun weekend for me.

ROFL! I always sound hoarse at the end of a show weekend. I missed seeing you call the youth raffle! Thanks for helping and we'll have one of your chickens in a cage at a show yet!

I really wonder what that duck was trying to call ! obviously a loose connection in there somewhere; DH said it sounded like farm machinery with a malfunctioning wheel

would have made a great burglar alarm

(my ears are still ringing ... between that one, one of the white ducks in the sales cages, and those guinea fowl ... )

I think the history of the call duck is fascinating. A teensy little duck bred to be EXTRA loud. Now, if only they made a quackless duck-- wait, that's the scovy!

Well, it's all yours then! LOL It would block my whole driveway!

OMG I would LOVE something like that (and so would my husband- considering I take up so much of our shop with birds). What a neat find for someone who can transport it and make it look good.

I thought the purpose of a Capon was so he would grow nice and big, and be tender for when you ate him. They are about 10-12 lbs, bit smaller than a turkey and good for my family of 2 (lots of leftovers so I don't have to cook every night). I had a capon a few weeks back - fabulous

I just started reading this, and catching up again.. so if someone has already stepped in and said something about this then my apologies!
I don't know about the flock guardian, but they do make good fosters for chicks, 'cause they are gentle. There was a write up on them at the Stevenson show, and now I can't remember all what it said about them.

The pullets are black also. Very nice ladies. They will stay with Mr. Gimp until the lav are really big enough to do their job....so they will have a few months together. I could get a tarp.....and I could wrap them up...you don't think they would get too cold? That is so what I am afraid of. They would be up against the cab. ...I have a box I could wrap around the cage too and then the tarp and then the bungee cords.

I dunno. He is already treating the young girls nicely. He is being a gentleman.

IMHO, the Muscovy makes really wonderful, but very RICH meat, plus, the drakes grow very fast and produce a huge breast in no time.

Not sure which is better, the Khaki Campbell or the Welsh Harlequin for egg laying. I know that Harlies can lay UP TO 350 eggs per year, and often outlay chickens. The eggs are big, but are otherwise like chicken eggs. (Muscovy eggs are a bit "snotty", the white part is gooey and icky until it's cooked, and they lay for a short season, but hubby loves them)

We breed Muscovies, and have just recently got two breeding pairs pf Harlies, with 10 chicks ordered for spring.

(Nice to meet you yesterday

If you are raising a duck just for eggs, I say go with an egglaying breed- the lightest of which is the runner... not sure which is most feed efficient. If you want dual purpose, I can highly recommend the Silver Appleyard.... however, they do eat more (being a heavy duck) and are quite massive. Very gentle, hardy. They are not a seasonal layer like the muscovy, although subject to the same slowdowns as chickens are without extra light in winter (daylight dependent).
