Birchen Boy is the one that nobody likes, and I think he's gorgeous. He's really being picked on, specially by "Beau", who seems to have taken over as "Top Man". The ladies simply adore him (course the others aren't "loose" yet). We'll see what happens tomorrow. Maybe it's because they have been without a roo for about 10 days now - I sold the BLRW when I knew I was getting the Icees. So they haven't had a man around

I'm going to wait a bit - I'd really like Birchen to stay - maybe things will settle down. But, I don't want a roo if he's not accepted - makes no sense.

Rabbits: We have a little Florida White buck (easy keeper, and makes dense, good dress out babies) which we cross with a huge Champagne D'Argent. The babies are fast growers and meaty. We also have 2 Black Otter Rex's (for the skins as well as meat) and one Broken Rex. All around good meat producers.

The freezer is almost full - just a couple of Cornish roos to add and we are set.

Life is good

I don't know how long it will take - but I can tell you we're having issues too. Between new birds, one molting, one getting done being broody, and two different ages of pullets - it's interesting. I wouldn't blame you if you were to get rid of the mean hen. Why stress your other girls out?

If one is mean, stick her in a rabbit cage for a while.
After a few days, put her back in the coop under darkness.
repeat if necessary.
If she is repeatedly mean, cull her.
her cockeral offspring will be really really mean.
Cockeral's temperment comes from their mothers.

The Cornish are very gamey as compared to other chickens, with deep red dark meat, almost as a duck.
Their skin is thick.so remove prior to soup.
I have not grilled any yet, that will happen when DH returns.
Goodnight all!

you must have great neighbors! mine would kill me if I put my chickens that close to them.....

Tips:
Make the floor easy to clean! meaning make the door big enough to get inside easy,
put something on the floor that is water proof and smooth = easy to clean (or wire floor that is at least 1" square so dropping go through)
Start with a roost high and a roost lower.... if needed make a roost in the middle. depending on the birds most like high but the big fluffy heavy hens need mid/low roost
1 nest box per 4 hens is fine... I have 8 layers all using 1 box

if possible make the run area with gravel and sand..... gravel under to drain the water and sand or wood chips (hog fuel type not shavings) top for the birds to run on. otherwise you will end up with a mucky mud run.

MAKE IT EASY TO GET IN!!!

number one rule you need to be able to reach everything inside!

Have fun! Enjoy! and for super friendly chickens handle them often and bring Treats!

Hi!
big_smile.png

I'm in Vancouver also! Orchards. I just started my first flock, this past spring. (my first 'winter') I am using our dog run. (Since the dog doesn't)
roll.png
I have a couple of small coops in the run. But our yard is also fenced, so I let them out of the run during the day. I have done really well with this set-up. Just started getting eggs about 2 weeks ago. (That has been real nice!) I have 13 chickens and 2 ducks. They are so much fun!

Good luck with your new flock, coming this spring. And welcome to BYC! Lots of helpful chicken friends here!
